Game freeze when choosing equipment screen

My game freezes every time I try to enter the menu to change equipment. This is very anoying, and is obviously a known problem. Se link:

http://social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/106/index/829901/2

I can find no working solution to this problem. I'v tried running it single core, on two core, ot three etc.. on every odd and every even core, tried running in compability mnode with Win XP (SP2 and 3) and Vista (32 and 64), but nothing removes the problem...

I'm running th following system:

4 core Intel i7 xeon W3530 with Hyper threading

6 GB of RAM

Nvidia GeForce GTX 580 (with updated drivers)

Do you have a fix to this problem? (I would expect so as it has been known since 2010 and the game still is for sale...)

Crossing fingers for a positive replay,

  • I used to have this problem on my old PC with an AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ (dual core). It happened when I ran the game on only one core (to bypass a loading glitch). Limiting your processor core was definitely a smart move, but beyond that, I don't know what else you could do.

As you said, the game is pretty old, so the answer might be out there. I'll try digging for a solution online, but I can't make any promises.

I'm a little confused about your processor model. I'm not familiar with Intel processors, so I googled the info you provided, and it seems Google considers i7 and Xeon two different models. Is there something I'm missing?

Update: The problem can be caused by the Firepower Pack. If you have this DLC, deleting it may fix the issue, but your save file becomes invalid. I have also found that third party video card utilities can cause the issue. (This is from my first Google hit. Not much "digging" so far, but let's see if this helps out.)

    Hi,

I7 is the core name. Xeon marks it as a server edition processor (i.e. it has a few extra instructions in the instruction set, and they are sometimes seperated from standard consumer processors by not using I7 in the name). Architecturally the I7 930 and I7 Xeon W3530 is identical. I've seen many running ME2 on I7 cores having the same problem...

I do not have the Firepower Pack DLC, but i do have the DLC's that comes with Cerberus.

By limiting the number of cores I could access the equipment screen for my team mates, but not for Shepard. When I went down to 2 cores the sound became distorted, and the game started glitching (i.e. unplayable).

I am running original Nvidia drivers for my GPU, and have even tried roling it back to see if a update crated the glitch, but it didn't help...

That's the thread I referenced when I mentioned the first Google hit. I should probably have linked to it. 😛

Glad you figured it out and thanks for confirming what caused the issue.
