Gamepad causes lag

I've been encountering a bug that causes the game pad (xbox one) to cause significant lag. as low as 10fps in ME1 (LE) down from buttery smooth 60+ (144). 

Reducing graphics options or resolution doesn't help. 

The only fix I can see is to play Keyboard and Mouse for the levels where it is bad (the final mission on the citadel is currently completely unplayable with gamepad). 

EA, please fix! I don't play at my PC I play on the couch and this is really frustrating!
