Low FPS after new hard drive

As per the title, my FPS for ME2 is very low when I run the game (anywhere between 18-25 FPS usually). I've had the game for nearly a year, and every single time I've played it prior, it would run silky smooth at max setting (upwards of 80 FPS). I did get a new hard drive after my old one failed on me (I went from a 1TB HDD to a 500GB SSD), but literally everything else about my computer is the same as it has always been, no new hardware or software (other than the same games I owned, plus Skype, Steam + Origin). I've tried disabling Origin in-game, which did nothing. I also set my settings lower, which did nothing. I'm not a computer wizard, so I don't know the different steps I can take to fix the issue beyond the obvious.

For reference, my specs are (I play on a laptop, keep in mind):

Intel i7 dual core 4700MQ 2.4GHz

Windows 8 64-bit

Nvidia GeForce 770m w/ 3GB of RAM (8GB RAM installed memory)

Again, the only thing I've changed about my computer between now and the last time I played was my hard drive, but that wouldn't affect how smoothly my game runs, would it?

  • Okay, I managed to solve my problem by myself. If anyone else is having similar issues, this is what I did (Nvidia GPU):

    1. Open up the Nvidia Control Panel (right-click on the shortcut of the game for faster access, then mouse over "run with graphics processor", click on "change default graphics processor"

    2. in "Manage 3d Settings", click on "MassEffect2.exe" under where it says "Select a program to customize".

    3. Click Add. It should open up your Libraries at this point. Go to your game folder (C:/Program Files (x86)/Origin Games/ Mass Effect 2/Binaries). Double click "ME2Game" to add that to the default launch.

    4. Where it says "Select the preferred graphics processor for this program", click on the dropdown menu and select High-performance Nvidia processor. Click Apply to finalize changes and it should work.

Feel free to lock this thread now.

  • Have you updated your graphics driver since you got the new hard drive? That's one possible explanation for a performance hit after a hard drive swap.

  • That was the first thing I did after putting the drive into my computer, in fact.
  • I have run into the same issue.  Only thing that changed on my system was the video card.  I went from a AMD HD6950 which ran smooth as butter to an Nvidia GTX760SC.  Now I get stuttering in the opening videos and gameplay.  I tried many things but ultimately decided to try running the game from a laptop with an AMD HD8400 card.  Back to working just fine.  I believe the problem is with the newer Nvidia cards and/or drivers.

I dunno about that. I've had the same card in my laptop for the entire time I've owned it (6 months or so, Nvidia GeForce 770m).

  • Self bump, if anyone can help me. ME2 is one of my favorite games of all time (if not my #1 favorite already), and I would love to play it again, but it's unbearable due to this framerate. It's like trying to play a PowerPoint slideshow.

  • Sorry to unbury an old thread but I had a similar problem that was resolved in a different way. My issue is that I couldn't get 60 FPS in windows PERIOD. Not in games, not on youtube, not even the mouse cursor would move to 60 FPS and this started when I upgraded to an SSD.

The way I fixed it, which was found because of OPs fix, was to go to the Nvidia control panel and under display on the left hand side I hit change resolution and in that menu I changed the refresh rate from 30 to 60. I don't know why it wasn't set to 60 automatically and nothing I could do would make that happen on its own. Perhaps because I have an off-brand 65" 4K TV I got on Black Friday for $228.

Either way I was happy to get this issue resolved and wanted to help anyone else possibly looking on Google like I did to find this thread. Here's an image to help those who have trouble following my instructions.
