Mass Effect 1 LE nitpicks (sprint head bobbing, MAKO)

Any way to turn off head bobbing?

The side-to-side undulating motion is one of the worst effects I've come across! It's not immersive, it's dizzying and nauseating. I do not remember the original being this bad? (Or was it? Might have to reinstall just to test it).

Here's an example of head bobbing done right: The Outer Worlds. I can actually tolerate that one just fine as it's very subtle (But there's people more sensitive than me that cannot tolerate even that). But most importantly, its got a setting to turn it off!

Yes, that results in you "floating forward" in a smooth motion instead of mimicking the walk / running swaying / up-down motion of the head. But when you actually do this IRL, you're naturally compensating for that. On a stationary display, not so much!

EDIT: Edited title for more annoyances as I progressed a bit..

On PC, it is OPTIONS, Control, then look for Maco Camera Relative Steering toggle....it is about midway, and toggle it off to get classic steering, and on for it to follow the camera.

I think it is only available while ingame in ME1.

  • Quick update: Nope, no head bobbing with the old version when sprinting. Had some other jankyness though.

"Luckily" the sprint doesn't last that long (either version, in the beginning of the game at least). Still, I'd rather not have that head bobbing.

  • I wasn't sure, but driving the MAKO now seemed worse than in the original. So I played that as well just to compare.

And sure enough, it's worse! Who tested this thing?

In the original, you could drive in one direction and aim in another, the two did not interfere. Not so with the new and "improved" ME1 LE. Ugh! Here the MAKO will follow the aiming (mouse look) direction. Making it much more annoying and difficult (it wasn't the easiest to begin with anyways, but they managed to make it worse).

Add to that they mashed together "interact" with "sprint" button.. nitpicks, nitpicks, but they add up.

I have to say, I'm starting to regret getting LE.

There is a way to fix the Mako in PC settings to turn it back to original game.  So at least on PC you can have the better control version.

I rarely sprint in ME so I haven't really noticed the headbob....lucky me I guess...lol.

Thanks! I have to look into that the next time I fire it up.

I guess I have to try not to sprint as well (it doesn't last long anyways). But old habit is kinda hard to turn off.
  • I would love to know how to turn off mouse steering the mako on pc. I can't believe they made the mako worse by slowing it down and not letting us aim and turn in different directions.

@mcsupersportOmg how did I miss that? (Somewhat embarrasing..) But thank you! Made it a lot better!

    EDIT :

So, played a bit lately and started enjoying it again. Still some jankyness to this left, like some graphical jitters now and then, but overall it's playable.

But one I forgot to mention was the MAKO speed boost screen shaking.. smh (pun intended I guess? lol). I can tolerate some screen shaking, as long as it isn't too often or too much, but this is just really an eye-sore!

Then it hit me: Mods! Doh! Ofc! Off to Nexus mods and a couple of mods later and most of those annoyances are gone! Awesome!

Actually one of the first things I got fixed a while ago was surround sound, which I feel is important. In short it's got to do with "OpenAL Soft". I'm not sure how much details are allowed but it's only a web search away.

EDIT 2: Guess I should have pressed "solution" on your post long ago, @mcsupersport ! Fixed! lol
