Mass Effect aspect ratio

I just installed Mass Effect 1 on a new machine. The machines native resolution is 1280x1024. Naturally, this the resolution I set the game to.

Problem is, the damn cutscenes and loading screens always come in on a 16:9 or 16:10 aspect ratio (I'm guessing), and this is a 4:3 monitor. It's annoying seeing the bars on the top and bottom of the screen every time I'm engaged in dialogue, and I'm a little perplexed because I've played this game before on several different machines, and I've never seen this before.

If it helps, I'm using an AMD Radeon HD 7560D display adapter.

Please help!

  • That's just how the cutscenes are framed. Mass Effect's 4:3 aspect ratio is vert+ (or rather, widescreen is vert-), meaning that people using the 4:3 aspect ratio see more than widescreen users. The black bars are added in cutscenes so you wouldn't see things you shouldn't.

That makes sense, but seeing as this is the Unreal 3 engine, is there anything I can do to change that feature?
