Mass Effect Censorship

I've asked on every official social media page, various YouTube sections, and contacted Bioware, but have gone unanswered so far so here I am at the source.

I've been a Mass Effect fan since the original's release. I played through a dozen times, and a dozen more since the trilogy was completed. When the first game came out, I was old enough to purchase it without a parent with me, as they have all been rated M.

Now, we are being faced with a new wave of censorship from the same political spectrum that opposed censorship in the 90's. But this topic isn't really about society and why adults are to be "protected" from things they are old enough to buy. This is about a very simple question that should have been easy to implement:

Will there be a setting or option to remove the censorship from the rerelease Legendary Edition?

We can certainly agree on the wait and see portion! I have a feeling the end result of slight camera angle adjustments won't be anywhere near what some people are fearing, though I can certainly understand the apprehension any time an old favorite is re-worked to any extent.

For what it's worth, quite a few of the same people actually are working on the game, including the game director who's worked on every single Mass Effect title. You can find his Twitter page here, where he has answered quite a few separate questions and provided some extra insight to folks.

Personally speaking it's pretty reassuring to see a team working on this that is super passionate and excited to re-visit their old project(s) and bring them closer to modern standards, which is a luxury not many games receive.

Locking this iteration of the thread again until we can all see for ourselves and have a discussion about the actual content in front of us, thanks!

    Hey @PhilTheStampede,

If you're referring to a mention of some updated camera angles, it's unlikely there will be a separate option to change those.

That's certainly something we've seen being discussed to some extent, though to my knowledge there has not been any updated footage shown of the scenes in question, so once people see any changes for themselves that's certainly a discussion that can take place.

  • Bioware has addressed the issue of changed camera angles, in saying that they didn't have a problem per se with the shot, except that it didn't make sense when you pair it with the dialog of the scenes.

For now, I will have to wait and see if the changes are good or bad....honestly, if you want to talk censorship, the I am looking at original trilogy games use of underwear in scenes that make NO sense to have it....shower, bedroom, etc....My personal belief on these kinds of scenes are if you are going to show a shower scene, make it real, if you want to show skin do so, if you don't pull a ME1 scene or just fade to black, and stop half measures.  I was real happy to see this finally come about in DAI and MEA, but I still role my eyes enough to see my brain when faced with the scenes in ME2 and 3....should have just cut to black or a shower curtain instead.......

IF all they did was reframe the scene to remove the emphasis on Miranda's asset, but keep the overall feel of the character and scene, then I have no real issue, if they change much more than that...well, not much I can do but complain on these boards AFTER I see the scene.  Not going to rage about it before....though, I kinda wish they had kept it as is, just because the original was that way, warts and all, just clean up the bugs, glitches and improve the graphics.

  • With cases like these, it's rare that censorship ends with a butt. And we also know that there pretty well aren't any of the same people working on the game, so what they say means nothing to me. I guess I'll have to wait and see what some rage-bait YouTuber has to say, since you know no journalist is going to cover anything that could affect EA being on good terms with them or the wokies who don't even play games trying to cancel them on Twitter.
