Mass Effect won't launch Windows 10

When I try to start the game the logo flashes up for a brief moment, then it just takes me right back to Origin. No error messages or anything.

I have tried almost every solution I found online and it still won't work. I've tried

  • Running it in compatibility mode for every version possible
  • Running it as an administrator
  • Running Origin as an administrator and launching from there
  • Disabling all virus protection software
  • Clearing Origin cache
  • Repairing the game
  • Reinstalling the game
  • Reinstalling Origin
  • Restoring Windows 10 with a system image backup
  • Reinstalling Windows 10
  • Installing latest drivers
  • Reinstalling Microsoft VC++ (see below)

I can only think of two things that may be related to the crashing. The first is that the masseffectlauncher.exe is not in my game files. I have seen online that other people have had the same problem, but there are never any solutions online. I only have the masseffect.exe and masseffectconfig.exe. The second would be when I try to run the masseffectconfig.exe I get the message

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

Runtime Error!

Program: C:\Program Files (...

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information.

I don't know if this will be related to the issue of the game not running or not, but that's all I've got. This game worked just fine when I played it on the same computer in June. It just stopped working sometime in between then and now.

    • Turn off "Cloud storage" in Origin.
(Origin menu > Origin > Application Settings > Install & Saves > Cloud storage > Off (Grey)
    • If you use Steam you don't have to do anything, unless you have added Mass Effect manually to Streams cloud save function.
    • Make sure Origin or Steam are closed.
    • Go to your "Documents\BioWare\Mass Effect" folder and move the "Save" folder and the "Config" folder to your desktop. > Test.

If that don't works create a DxDiag in text file format and post it with your next reply. You can do that  with the "Choose file" button at the bottom right corner of the reply window.

  • Wow that actually worked. So the problem was with the save and config files in my cloud storage? That's wild. Anyway, thanks!

One or the other, probably not both.

    You're welcome!
