ME:3 Multiplayer - cannot invite or join Friends anymore

It seems there must have been some EA App update that broke the functionality to allow ME3MP to allow you to invite friends. Until recently you could still start a private game and then in the lobby click on one of the empty slots to select one of your friends from the EA app. Right now that does not do anything anymore.

Friends of mine are reporting the same issue so it is not specific to me.
