Origin Won't Install; Cannot Play the Game

When I try to play Mass Effect: LE via Steam (the platform I bought it on), it auto-runs OriginThinSetup (as it is supposed to, since Origin had been uninstalled since the last time I played it). The issue is that OriginThinSetup does not seem to be doing anything. It shows that it is running in the Task Manager with CPU and RAM allocated to it, but nothing happens for well over an hour.

Things I have tried already, not necessarily in order:

-Restarting the computer. No change.

-Running OriginThinSetup.exe directly from the file folder as administrator. No difference.

-Completely uninstalling and reinstalling the game, which did nothing but produce the same result.

-Downloading and running the standalone installer for Origin (OriginSetup), which produced the same result (runs in Task Manager, but no progress for extended period).

-Downloading and installing an old version of Origin, which did install, but then had to update, resulting in an error message that prompted me to download and use the standalone OriginSetup (see above bullet point for how that worked out).

-Installing the new EA App, which claims to replace Origin. This did not work and the game still tried to install Origin, putting things back to square one.

Things to note:

This issue has occurred on both modded AND unmodded versions of the game post-reinstall, so it's not a mod issue.

This is not an issue that can be solved by uninstalling/cleaning/clearing the cache of Origin. Origin is not installed on my computer in any location whatsoever, so these options are not valid.

The game worked and was playable as of July 2021. My hardware has not changed since then, so it is not a hardware issue.

I have heard people say that sometimes AMD and Origin can have issues, so it may be relevant that I'm running an AMD system (CPU and GPU). Drivers are up to date.

Windows is up to date. Windows 10 if that matters.

I really want to play this game again, so any help would be appreciated!

Please preform a clean boot and test the installation in clean boot mode.

Make sure your virus scanner and other security software and also Afterburner and similar software is disabled.

Please create a DxDiag in text file format and post it with your next reply. You can do that  with the "Choose file" button at the bottom right corner of the reply window.

Try to clear your Origin cache.

      • Close Origin completely.
(right click on the Origin symbol in the task bar > close)
      • Press the Windows key and "R" at the same time.
      • Type or copy and paste "%ProgramData%/Origin" (without quotes) into the new window > hit ENTER
      • Delete all the files and folders in the Origin folder, except for the "LocalContent" folder.
(The "LocalContent" folder must remain untouched.)
      • Delete the "Mass Effect XX" folder inside the "LocalContent" folder.
      • Press the Windows key and "R" at the same time.
      • Type or copy and paste "%AppData%" (without quotes) into the new window > hit ENTER
      • Now your Windows explorer should have brought you to your "C:\Users\>your user name<\AppData\Roaming" folder.
      • Delete the "Origin"  folder inside the "Roaming" folder.
      • In the address bar of your Windows explorer click on "AppData".
      • Open the "Local" folder.
      • Delete the "Origin"  folder inside the  "Local" folder.

Even if Origin is not installed, we need to purge left overs from previous installations.

look at this guide. to preform a clean uninstall of Origin.

    • Scroll down to "How to uninstall the Origin client the hard way"
    • Follow the instructions to the letter until you reach "Last, remove your Origin program cache".
(We already did that in the steps above.)
    • reboot.
    • Download this version of the "OriginSetup.exe"
    • Run the installer as Administrator (Right click the "OriginThinSetup.exe" > Run as an Administrator) > Test.

Your link to the version of the setup you want me to download doesn't seem to be working. I've done everything up to that point.

It is a direct downloade link, did you checked your Download folder?

    (I renewed the link anyway.)

I think it was just formatted wrong. It works now though. I downloaded and ran it as administrator, but it's the same deal as before. No visible popup to show it's doing anything.

OriginThinSetup and OriginThinSetupInternal show up in the task manager and seem to have resources allocated to them, but nothing visible happens. No popup asking to allow it to make changes to the computer, nothing. ThinSetup sits at 0 CPU usage and 1.6 MB of RAM. ThinSetupInternal sits at ~9.6% CPU usage and 2.6 MB of RAM.

This seems to have worked...sort of.

Performing a clean boot did allow me to install and run Origin. When I boot normally, however, I cannot run Origin even though it is installed, meaning I still can't run the game. Performing another clean boot once again allows me to access Origin and, in turn, to play the game.

I guess this just means I'll have to perform a clean boot every time I want to play Mass Effect. Definitely a lot better than not being able to play it at all, so thank you kindly for that.

If you have any tips that might allow me to run it without the clean boot, I'd appreciate it, but otherwise my problem seems to be solved.

EDIT: I decided to try re-enabling things bit by bit until it stopped working again and what I found was...unexpected. I was able to re-enable all the msconfig services (all the ones I recognized, anyway) so then it was time to start messing with the Task Manager startup items. As it turns out, my Huion Tablet utility, for WHATEVER reason, was the thing not playing nice with Origin. So...a warning to anyone who uses a Huion tablet and wants to use Origin, I guess.

    Very good!

And yes, Trial and Error is the only thing you can do in such a case.

Good that you found the culprit.

    Have fun gaming!
