[PC] There is a problem connecting to the server. ME1 authorization issue.
I installed Mass Effect 1 on Friday afternoon, on Windows 7 64 bit (Home Premium, Service Pack 1), using an install disk that uses the 5 authorizations style DRM. Due to personal preference, I'm not using Origin. On clicking 'play' on the launcher for the first time, the launcher disappears, there's a pause, then I get this error message:
Important Message!
There is a problem connecting to the server. Please ensure your internet connection is active. If the problem persists try again later.
During my process for trying to narrow down what was causing the message (disabling my firewall, and my anti virus, with no change) I then also tried the de-authorization management tool for Mass Effect. I used it last week to de-authorize my install on my old operating system (Windows XP), and it worked fine, so I figured I'd try it to see if that threw up the same error, and it did. However, it's back and forth with working. I checked back with it every couple of hours, and after spending most of Friday not working, it finally got through and worked again in the evening. The same error remained with trying to launch Mass Effect itself though.
I wanted to be 100% sure this is an issue on EA's end and not mine, so this morning, I plugged in a hard drive with Windows XP and an install of Mass Effect that has worked perfectly in the past, and which I had de-authorized without issues. The same message happened there, both with the game when it tried to authorize, and the de-authorization tool (though again, the tool was back and forth with sometimes working, sometimes throwing up the error). I tested this with and without a firewall and anti virus enabled to be doubly sure the problem isn't on my end.
So, tl;dr, EA's process for authorizing Mass Effect on its first launch via a non-Origin install doesn't seem to be working. I've tested this with two operating systems, one of which has been fine with the game in the past. This issue also seems to be effecting Sims 3 on Mac OS, which makes me wonder if all games that use that authorization system are experiencing problems 🤔 Any chance we can get official confirmation that there's issues with the authorization servers, and hopefully a fix?
(Sorry for any typos or if I've rambled a little, it's 2:30am where I am and this insomniac is off to try get some sleep 😳 )
- :D You were fast!
We made some changes in order to try to fix this issue, but you didn't give us enough time to test it for all the games. 😉
Glad to hear it's working for you with Need for Speed Undercover! If anyone tries other games, please let us know how it goes!
Thanks,
-Mai
