I have beaten the game. 105 hours and here is my experiance with weapons and armors when it comes to crafting/sell/dismantle. Don't spend points in researching anything other then augments you like. Unless you found your favorite weapon or armor. You don't really get enough points to research everything. Every weapon and armor you can research you can find as loot in the game. So, if your curious if a certain gun or armor is to your likeing. Kill things till it drops. Usually what ever uses that type of weapon drops it. That way you will know what you like towards the end of the game.
End game is were crafting really helps. My armor set dropped from mobs as well as my guns. They were always the same lv I was so I was not getting under leveled stuff. When the game was getting close to the end. That is when I crafted exactly what I wanted. Crafting will let you do augments to make your stuff better then dropped stuff.
Hope that helps. Also there is a cryo bonus in AVP that gives you more augments. Save your last point for that as you won't get enough points to get every AVP bonus.
