i have to disagree with the swapping mods and augments, because... in the real world it's quite easy to swap-out the stock, barrel, add an optical sight... all it takes is tools and a workspace, you don't need to breakdown a rifle to it's base materials and rebuild it to swap out such parts.

From a realism point of view you have a point but in the end I want a system that is more fun to do or less bothersome if you will. I'll give it some more thought though to see if I can find an alternative that satisfies both sides of it.

and i'm all about immersion. the more i have to utilize my disbelief suspension system, the less i enjoy playing.
as to augs, and to what i know about the tech involved from reading the codex entries over the last 4 games, i can see how most would be integrated into the weapons construction, such as vintage heatsinks, or the beam emitter, and so on and so forth. though not all of em are... so i guess you have a point or perhaps a half-point?

There is always a balance between reality and gameplay if you will. Immersion is also personal because a lot of people will not even know anything about real life weaponry. Of course it's Sci-Fi so that gives some leeway as well.
Immersion is a thing though. If something really distracts then it's not a good thing. You have to rely on the player's willingness to accept things and let's be honest...look at basically any action movie and see how much stuff happens in there that's just not possible. So I do get that feeling.
I remember watching Under Siege 2 with a friend and his brother. His brother was a Navy Seal. When the Navy Seals attacked the ship in the movie he just burst out laughing and pointed out the whole list of things that Seals would never do. I can't see that movie now without laughing.
Anyway, there has to be a way to get the best of both worlds here...just haven't thought of it yet 😉

i don't remember a ship in under siege 2 (that one was on the train, and involved an orbital seismic weapon system)... do you mean the first movie? or are you thinking navy seals?
yes, i'm a movie buff, especially those types of movies.
