For anyone who has a similar issue - I think I fixed it by:
1) Alt-tab out of the game
2) You should see Origin running
3) Go to the Origin settings and go to "Saves" and disable cloud saves
4) Go back to the game and click on "load save"
5) Make sure you have an autosave present
6) Quit the game and restart
7) You should now be able to save manually again AND if like me your save game previously disappeared, it should be back now.
The problem returned even with cloud saves turned off.

Hi, if you launch the game as administrator does that have an effect? It sounds like there might be a restriction in WIndows on the game writing to the C drive to create saves.
Hi - I can test it out late today but basically I'm seeing sporadic issues with save games.
Most of the time doing a manual save will work and then sometimes I get an error message and all of the sudden all my manual save games won't appear in the menu anymore while autosaves are still there.
Then if I restart the game the manual saves will reappear.
It sounds like a cloud save issue whereas I lose connection to the cloud server but like I mentioned Ive been seeing this behaviour even with cloud saves turned off.
