Scanning For No Reason?

Okay, another rather minor issue I have is the scanner.

My main issue with it is how there are times that things highlight to scan (solid orange/orange red?) and it doesn't do anything.  By do anything, I mean it doesn't give you any research points nor is it to advance a mission.

So why have it highlight?

Now some of you might go, "Well Pretzle, sometimes you just want to know what something is man!"

And to that I would respond with, how are you?  Thank you for stopping by.  And then I would say no I don't just want to know what something is and point out that when this sort of thing happens, it's commonly with an object that you've scanned before elsewhere.

So say we're talking those solar lamps on Voeld.  I imagine the first time you scan one, they give research but after that, they don't so why make them solid colored?

Other things handle this properly.  If I scanned an Adhi before, the next time I raise a scanner to one anywhere, it isn't solid.  It just tells me what it is.

Yes, it is a minor thing.  Yes, I'm grumpy right now because it's been raining for 3 or 4 days straight where I am, but by the Goddess this can be annoying to me sometimes.

I just did the Cora Loyalty mission and there's all this debris you can scan for no reason.

Thoughts?  Feelings?  Is everyone enjoying their weekend?  Lol

  • Techinically propably just a coding oversight. When some object needs to be scannable somewhere, it's scannable everywhere. Feels like they don't have a simple way of going through all the maps to turn of "scannable" tags. And in the process maybe break something...they left it alone.

But think of it this way, SAM/Ryder doesn't have a crystal ball. They don't know what it is specifically untill you scan it. "Oh, it's that thing again" or "Meh, just a pile of rubble"

iirc, at some point i think they might have given us research points? i can't tell if it's my memory playing tricks on me, or not, but i recall earlier pts were i did keep getting RPs for scanning that stuff again.

as to the rain, i live in the desert, i'd welcome a little of that rain, not too much at once though, we don't need flashfloods.

Yeah, those heat lamps are a minor annoyance to scan once you've scanned a hundred or so, not like a Kett generator or similar object that you scan once and they no longer appear with that orange/red glow.  I still find myself scanning all those heaters on the off chance that it is something new.

What's really fun is scanning wildlife for the first time.  Getting close enough to scan it before your companions shoot it, getting the scan, and then get hit in the face by a giant raptor-like lizard before you can switch to your weapon.

Sun is finally trying to break through the fog this morning (9:30am Portland, ME) after 4 days of rain/wind and fog.

"...Techinically propably just a coding oversight..."

I believe this as well.  Either way, it is just annoying for me at times because I have a condition that draws me to glowing things and forces me to scan them, lol.  I distract easily haha.

"...Feels like they don't have a simple way of going through all the maps to turn of "scannable" tags..."

I think they do because for some things and or living creatures, you never have to scan them again once you've scanned them once.  Perhaps whatever the scanner uses to identify things as previously scanned is also used by another mechanism in the game so it is necessary to keep that ID different?  I don't know.

"...But think of it this way, SAM/Ryder doesn't have a crystal ball. They don't know what it is specifically untill you scan it..."

I'd be okay with that if we sometimes found research or something because of the scan but we don't in those cases.  Also, that may be more realistic but that's too realistic for me.  Scanning is a nuisance that I accept like mining so don't make it more of one than it has to be.  That's my opinion.

Yeah, I know I shouldn't complain as things can always be worse but what fun would that be to not complain?  Pffft!  Lol.

For some things I do think you keep getting points.  Honestly, I don't agree with that either or feel like there should be a limit.  Like once I scan a sunlamp 3 times, that's it.  No more points for Sunlamps but also, no more glowing sunlamps.

YEAH!  Me too, lol.  Like I know they won't give me any points but still, I scan every time.  It's like I have some weird OCD going on haha.  You and I should start a support group for others like us.  Scanners Anonymous.

Another thing that annoys me with the scanner sometimes... sometimes you have to find the perfect spot to scan something.  I've been on the glowing part of something and it isn't good enough.  In fact, there's times where the scanner won't scan the object unless you're not on the glowing part??

PS - I hate scanning footprints in this game.

Pretty much me as well. And those shield generators on Eos that protects Site 1 and 2 from the radiaton. I still scan them even today just because all of them are glowing red. They not giving me anything but i still do.

Worse if i have TONS of resarch points and i dont wanna miss out anything even if i know having currently 1500 points would be enough till the end of the game because i need to resarch only the cryo gauntlet from the remnant tree which is already lvl6 and on lvl7 or 8 i probably finish the game.

2 days ago did Cora's loyalty mission and scanned every debris on the Leusinia and. Cant tell why.

In this playthrough i discovered a new mission too "Aid APEX" which required to scan enemies - i had 12 scanned out of 20. It was hilarious in a firefight chasing a certain enemy with a scanner while others were shooting at me. I got even killed twice 😃, and once because the enemy was already scanned but i thought its not glowing bc. im not close enough.
