Should a ranged pure biotic take weapon skills later?

I'm about 50% through the game (on Elaaden), and I have points in all biotic passives and mostly the ranged skills (pull, throw, singularity, shockwave and lance).  Since I do use a few weapons like the BW and Sidewinder, I feel like I'm at a crossroad.  I mostly use the weapons for taking out shielded enemies if I can't tear down shields enough with pull/singularity. But I can now start putting points into Combat to raise individual weapon skills, or I can put more points into Biotics so that my profile gets stronger.  I'm playing on Insanity so I don't really see myself using the close quarters skills like charge, annihilation, and nova.  Putting points into those feels a bit like they're being wasted.

I also have a full set of points into Tac Cloak, since it's just so useful in nasty situations, so I suppose Sentinel is an option (although switching to this profile would take away a lot of really nice passives).

Anyone else play as a Biotic and have suggestions which way to go when you branch off like this?

Thanks!

  • I have a full biotic play going for the second round...ie, I did a normal or maybe it was hardcore play, then amped it up this time around to Insanity level.  She is about level 71 now, finished the game at low 60s in level.  I had points maxed in all Biotics and I mean ALL, plus some in tech, and Combat.  The tech was mostly passives and combat was guns and passives.  The reason was simple, tech passives give more shields, and bonuses to companions, and Combat makes my guns better and gives health.   I never switched out to tech or combat profiles, always kept just pure Biotic.  Honestly, if you use guns, then by all means put some points into them for effectiveness and weight control.

As far as Nova, Charge and Annihilation, well, if you like that kind of play they can be fun, if not, then as the points come around, still put them in for the bonuses you will get from more points in Biotics, and just don't use them.

For a fun and different play, a charge, cloak and your favorite third power can be really fun....charging in, cloaking and then blasting away can be very effective....but not to everyone's liking.

Cloak then charge. For the Vanguard surprise achievement.

Thanks for the feedback.  I think I'll take the passive tech stuff and some gun skills, then keep putting points into biotics.  At least I can give that melee playstyle a spin and see what it's like (I picture myself dying a lot 🙂 )

With the Vanguard Profile you have some nice buffs to shield and health that comes in handy in melee. Especially charge gets a bonus.

What's the trick to running a close quarters Vanguard build on insanity?  From what I can see in the descriptions, Annihilation, Charge, and Nova seem to have a nice symmetry, but you must have to be aware of the surroundings, so you have a way to take cover after wading into the fray.  What about tactical cloak?  Does it help as far as getting out of danger after a big hit?  I was thinking of a charge, then nova, then cloak to escape.  I get shredded in a hurry on insanity if I'm not careful.

Use Cloak, Charge and my personal favorite Assault turret. The latter are great for distracting some of the enemies. Have the upgrade that cloaks for 2 sec. on Melee this gives you time to evade after a charge.

Is Assault Turret better than the Remnant skill you get from PeeBee?

You mean the Remnant VI. In my opinion the Assault turret is better. If I place it somewhere to cover a special area it stays there while the Remnant VI tends to wander all over the place often far from you attacking an animal or minor foe that are no threat to you. Upgraded with Flamethrower it does serious damage.

I decided to re-spec as a Vanguard, and you guys weren't kidding...that is a seriously devastating build.  The shield regen/restoration turns you into a wrecking ball with an asari sword.  The only thing I have trouble with are big armored enemies like hydras, so I usually switch to incendiary ammo. Charge/Annihilation/Backlash has been a nice mix, but sometimes I feel like I don't need backlash, and could try something else like Shockwave or Nova.
