The shuttle chase only makes sense if she has a big head start, like if some beaurocratic so-and-so refused to authorize the Tempest for emergency departure.
As for the Rocaar knowing about the virus, either aunty tries to warn them away for their own good, or the Nexus leaks information like a sieve via a bunch of shady individuals with shadier connections (which is not a problem the Nexus has, right?)
actually the head start could be explained by the tempest's check list if it's anything like the normandy check list that ship is not going anywhere for 30 minutes to an hour and i doubt kallo would rush the check list and hurt his baby :D

Yes and unfortunately it's not the only poorly designed mission in MEA.
