[Steam] ME1 crashes in Normandy cargo hold

No matter what I do (I validated files on Steam, closed Steam & EA apps, and restarted my PC), Mass Effect 1 crashes when I traverse the cargo hold on the Normandy after the Feros mission. And the crash is bad enough that I can't pull up Task Manager to end task; the PC freezes and I have to hold the power button to turn it off.
