The Next Mass Effect & Commander Shepard

I have played all the Mass Effect games, even Andromeda and I absolutely love them all. After I finished Andromeda (2nd time) that I finished in 2021 I was convinced that any Mass Effect game would probably follow Andromeda's story. I know it's not a popular opinion but I really did love it and I feel there is so much opportunity for growth there. However, I literally just finished the trilogy and I hadn't played in a long time because I remembered feeling so sad after the game ended.

*Spoilers*

I feel, now more than ever, that the Mass Effect 4 game should follow Commander Shepard and crew storyline. It's so hard to end like that because our hero supposedly died. If Shepard had lived I think I would have closure, but after doing SO much over the course of the trilogy only for our protagonist to die and not get his happy ending is beyond devastating. To have him/her return with his/her romantic interest (Kaiden Alenko) for me would be such incredible news. I know the chances of that are slim but I have to put it out there that this is where I truly hope ME4/ME5 takes it.

If not, then I hope that it will continue to follow Andromeda. I can't imagine returning to the milky way with anyone else but Commander Shepard, I would rather not start an entirely new storyline. We already have such wonderful characters in Mass Effect Andromeda, their story should continue if we are thinking of building on a new protagonist.

These are just my views, what do you think?

Also thank you BioWare for allowing LGBTQ2+ characters, romance and storyline into this game. The way it is done is beyond spectacular. I have never experienced a love story like Male Shepard and Kaiden's before in fiction and beyond a member of this community it means everything to me.

Strange, she never died in my Playthroughs. 🤔

@holger1405 in the synthesis ending Shepard supposedly died but I am going with the destroy ending because of that breath that gives me hope LOL
  • I don't know if you're aware of the recent rumours about Shepard's return, but it's looking more and more likely.

I'm all for them continuing after the single world state where Shepard survives. Some players may have concerns about canonising one ending, but it's technically not that different from being unable to import an ME2 save into ME3 if Shepard didn't survive the suicide mission. It's a continuation of one thread, which doesn't mean the other threads can't be part of another player's story.

I heard the argument that Shepard's story is done and therefore shouldn't return. I disagree with this for two reasons, firstly that a character can have more than one story, and secondly that - in my opinion - Mass Effect was not Shepard's personal story, even if they were the main character in it. You can tell an interesting story about post-war recovery and the current state of the galaxy from Shepard's point of view. Even if Shepard isn't the player character, they can still have a big part in it.

I agree, I think canonizing the end would make BioWare's job significantly easier and I hope that this is what they do. I would be disappointed if they canonized the romance options though. For me, it has to be Shepard, and it has to be the old Crew, Kaidan, Liara, Tali, Garrus, etc. It wouldn't be the same otherwise.

  • I'd be staggered if BioWare canonised any ending, but they are more than capable of arriving at any starting point they want for Mass Effect 5, given what I think will be hundreds of years between Mass Effect 3 and the next game.

We'll just have to wait to see.

    I agree with @SofaJockeyUK.

There is a lot that points to a timeline that is on the level of Andromeda, so 600+ years after ME3.
This gives the devs plenty of opportune to find a reason why the effects of the endings, no matter what they player choosed, are just not visible anymore.

Canonised the ending would mean to have another shit storm on hand before the game even is finished.
