Why does Mass Effect textures look so bad?

I recently (a week ago) purchased the ME:Trilogy. I already owned the original game on PC and both the original and sequel on the 360, but never got around to playing ME3. So I decided to get the trilogy and reacquaint myself with the series, finally playing the 3rd installment. This is all in preparation for Andromeda.

The graphics (textures) are horrendous in the original entry. When I initially played the PC version in 2009, they weren't remotely that awful (see attached jpg screenshot from that playthru file).

I was able to repair *some* of the main characters' textures by adding the MEUITM (or something like that) Mod, but most if not all of the environment textures are atrocious (see attached png file) - as well as many NPC clothing textures. I'm not the type to be overly concerned about game graphics, but the screens I've seen so far make the game unplayable.  I've only just became a Spectre and have spent more time trying to fix this issue that actually playing the game.  I dread what awaits me graphic-wise if I choose to continue.

When I attempt to edit the BIOEngine file for anything other than forcing higher screen resolutions, I get constant and consistent crashes.

I disabled the shadow, film grain and motion blur settings.

I'm running an i7, 8GB, GTX 1050.

What can be done?

  • After looking at the BIOEngine.ini file, I discovered that changing the TextureLODLevel=1 to TextureLODLevel=3 fixes the issue slightly. It's not great, but it's a lot better than that muddy mess..
