Re: HDR issue on PC

Same Problem here:

LG OLED C9 with GeForce 2080Ti. The Game starts in Dolby Vision and when I switch with ALT-TAB to the Desktop the Game crashes with the Black-Screen! Need a fix by choosing in HDR Mode to HDR / HDR10 / Dolby Vision / OFF / Automatica...

Please... EA... Whats going on?

Regards, Uwe

Dolby vision seems to be only working with RGB color space and not ycbr which makes playing on an OLED a pain the * because you can only play with 8 bits at RGB full 4k/60fps. the whole point of dolby vision is to make use of the 12bit colors. the only way I could make it work with dolby vision at 12 bit RGB full is to limit my OLED to 30fps. there is still the black screen bug tho, even if you quit the game, the signal is still dolby vision.

You can bypass dolby vision if you set ycbr to 4:2:2 @ 12 bit and then enable HDR in windows display setting. when you go in-game set it to borderless window. thats the only way to get proper HDR10

seems like no one in the dev department actually tested to see if everything works. what a mess

This is probably the worst pc port I've played in the last few years.

Black screen on alt-tab which forces me to restart my pc...

Even if I somehow start the game in HDR, it can randomly stop working or turn purple for no reason...really, really disappointing.

I've subscribed to Premier because of this game.

I for sure won't be extending it.

  • Is EA ever going to respond or fix this? This really isn't that complicated of a problem and for being one of the biggest gaming companies in the world you guys have awful communication and the lack of patching is disgusting. I remember when games used to be shipped on a disc and had to work. Fire your QA team, please.

    We need a fix ASAP!!!

Thx to EA and NFS Heat, now I cannot use my TV with my computer anymore...

I had no issue before, but now that I launched NFS, TV was automatically set to DV and even after alt+F4 the game (because of black screen), my TV stays in DV as long as my computer is plugged to it.

I tried to reset the settings of HDMI port of TV, I tried to plug computer on another TV HDMI port, I tried to properly uninstall nVidia drivers and install again, I tried to disable HDR in Windows... nothing changed...

No issue with other sources with HDR and DV (netflix, amazon prime), only with computer.
    Please EA, do something

  • Hi EA and Ghost Games,

No doubt from reading through this thread you've noticed that the Dolby Vision / black screen issue is still prevalent with any of the Frostbite games that have Dolby Vision as an option.

I've been playing the trial of NFS Heat, and I actually want to commend EA and Ghost Games for making a good NFS game. As a passionate gamer, I would actually buy NFS Heat tomorrow if this Dolby Vision / Black Screen issue was fixed on PC.

I do have an Xbox One X but I'd rather playing at 60fps, and not be limited to console limitations of 30fps. Of course with the Xbox version, HDR works fine because it isn't trying to prompt Dolby Vision.

Please try and find a solution to this problem and at least give the consumer an option to set standard HDR vs Dolby Vision.

    Thanks for your time.

    Grocs.

I personally stopped complaining once I realized regular HDR works in borderless window mode.  I couldn't get DV to work at all on my C6, black screen when the game boots up no matter what.  It's a fun game so I'm just glad I get to play it in HDR as is, no idea if DV would look noticeably better but ignorance is bliss at this point lol.

Same problem with an LG OLED B9 and 2080Ti.  Dolby Vision kicks on and the game goes to black screen.  I can hear the sound.  Game is playable if I go to windows and turn HDR off before launching.  Please address.

  • EA, can you fix this issue please, seriously ?

Can you at least, answer to this thread/post ?

3 Weeks and the game is still no playable normally for Dolby Vision TV owner, why ???

Also, yes the HDR "works" in bordeless windowed when HDR is ON in Windows 10 but this is not real HDR, also performance of the game is ridiculous when playing in borderless mode, Full screen is much more stable with more FPS. (and i have a 2080 Ti + 3900X + 32GB3733 C14 ...)

You need to set nvidia control panel to 4:2:2 12bit limited for dolby vision to work properly.

  • Not true, I tried that and it did not make a difference.  I don't think I have ever been successful with DV on a PC ever.

The reason it doesn’t work is the developers fault however 4:2:2 12bit limited is the proper format for Dolby Vision on PC.

  • If this shoddy broken HDR is the only reason that made them put in a half-assed FORCED OS check for windows 10 (that is, origin won't let you download unless it thinks you're on 10, but every other part of the game works fine in 7 - it launches in 7 if it doesn't need an update) and not 'certifly' it for 7, 8, and 8.1..

Then well... If it's a mess to begin with, why bother?

Just add it in a patch later when it's fully tested! And tell windows 7, 8, 8.1 that HDR will not work (or grey it out) and 10 users that it may cause issues in certain configs.

I cannot believe that I still have to restart my computer when I exit this game in order to be able to use my computer.

I did figure out that if you alt+enter when you get the black screen while the game is still running (this happens randomly), it will solve the issue...until it happens again.

  • Let me repeat my post HOW TO FIX DOLBY VISION BLACK SCREEN WHEN LAUNCHING THE GAME: use fresh driver install or DDU, set RGB 8bit Limited. Only then DV will work without problem and 100%. Also, game sometimes after launch pushes RGB to FULL and its colors are looking reversed. Just task switch to NCP and switch back to Limited. Screen will go black but task switch alt tab blindly to the game and it will work too. Unfortunately black screen after quiting the game is present and just do soft reset🙂

  • @KrystaGG , thank you for your effort to help us work around the issue, but please do not call this a "fix." Manually setting the color profile  and having to flip out of game intermittently means the game is not working as intended.  Having to soft reset the game when you quit because it will lock on a black screen is a significant defect for a AAA title.

I understand but thats not games fault rather than Dolby Visions experimental stage and nvidias graphic driver(not sure if anyone ever tried DV game mode on a radeon?). EA delivered DV for which we should be grateful but the issue must be directed to nvidia its not EAs fault this one time🙂. I try writing on Nvidia driver forums seems like they listen and act quick given recent drivers black level bug on oleds C9 which was instantly fixed on next one. Every DV game has got same issue but its fixable. I am glad personally we can play in Dolby vision cause how cool is that? This is superior technology to standard hdr with its dynamic metadata and it gives better picture quality. Something you can only get on pc for a price🙂

  • @KrystaGG Could you please provide the link of the post on nVidia forum ?
Also yeah, DV is great as technology but rather than non-working DV it could be better to have working HDR, and it's already difficult enough to have working HDR on PC games contrary to console (I never had any issue with HDR games on PS4 pro but I had a lot with HDR games on PC...).

@KrystaGG No It’s EAs fault for not testing Dolby Vision In their game. If it’s broken why is it even in the game in the first place? They could have easily used HDR Instead of using a feature that doesn’t work!! Microsoft and Nvidia are too stupid to agree on a standard button to enable normal HDR, why would EA even consider adding Dolby Vision which they clearly didn’t test is beyond stupid as far as im concerned.
  • I used to restart the PC but I figure out that i have to turn off HDR on the tv and i can go back to the pc screen... other than that i also found the only way dolby vision worked for me when I dropped resolution to 1080p.. once it goes higher than that it crashes.
