Re: Need for Speed Shift won't start

I'm not sure why Shift wouldn't work because its 's "old"... I have games that are a decade older than Shift that run with no problems on my 8.1 including a NFS game from 2000. Anyway, if I were to get a download version, what does that entail? I hope it's not something complicated like having to send the game in mail first to receive the download version. I specifically bought the box version because I like owning the physical copy. I even passed up a good deal on digital version to have the real thing.

What I explained about games that might not work only holds true for disc versions. And like you experienced, it doesn't hold true for all games either.

As for getting a digital download; the only thing that will change is your code, and that you will be given the option to download the game via Origin, instead of having to use the disc to install.

Have a look at this article for more information about downloading your games via Origin:

    https://help.ea.com/en/article/how-do-i-download-my-new-game-on-origin/

Meanwhile, did the troubleshooting article I provided help you? Were you able to complete all the steps?

  • You just you're code into origin and start your digital download. No disk required.

Alright, thank you. I tried all the steps except updating graphics driver. I'm going to try that today. Last time I did it messed up the graphics on numerous games so I reverted it. But thanks for your help!

Is the download version guaranteed to work, barring my graphics is updated and everything else has been checked?

When updating your gpu drivers, you might want to do so with a clean install to avoid problems.

I cannot guarantee that the download version will work because there are different reasons for why a game isn't working, but it is definitely worth checking out. If it still doesn't work, please provide me with a dxdiag and I will investigate further.

Will do! I believe my graphics driver is an integrated Intel, and I don't think you can do a clean installation with those (correct me if I'm wrong). I'm going to try Live Chat again tomorrow for the digital download code, still haven't had success contacting yet, so I'll get back to you after I get to try that.

Well it gets stranger. I also recently bought Hot Pursuit (2010), and it runs fine. Same video card requirement. I tried that website, passed everything but the video card, BUT it shows I have 1.6gb memory...and so I pass all the subcategories...weird. I guess I don't pass it because its not an Nvidia or ATI? Only other problem it shows is "?" rating for operating system, since Windows 8 wasn't out when Shift released, though it wasn't for Hot Pursuit either.

Also I tried updating graphics driver, that didn't solve it either (again, even un-updated, works with Hot Pursuit lol).

I still haven't been able to contact anyone through LiveChat. I've tried several times, usually between 4-7pm eastern. I usually can't try earlier because of work. Is there anyway you could do the switch to digital version for me?

I have attached my dxdiag as well.

    Hi @40rott,

I will copy the relevant information from your dxdiag:

Card name: Intel(R) HD Graphics 4000
           Manufacturer: Intel Corporation
Chip type: Intel(R) HD Graphics Family
               DAC type: Internal
            Device Type: Full Device
             Device Key: Enum\PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_0166&SUBSYS_05971028&REV_09
         Display Memory: 1664 MB
       Dedicated Memory: 32 MB
          Shared Memory: 1632 MB

Looking at the data, you were referring to the display memory. Since that is shared with the rest of your system, you cannot fully rely on this. This is also the reason why the requirements for games ask for dedicated memory--which in your case is only 32mb.

Since your system does not meet the minimum requirements I cannot guarantee the game will run on your system. Sometimes a game will still run, as you experienced, but we will be unable to further troubleshoot any issues should they occur.

One last thing I noticed in your dxdiag is that you had a lot some Windows Update failures. If your Windows installation is not updated it can also cause issues. Please search for Windows Update on your system and you should be able to run the update. If it still fails, try doing it in a clean boot.

As for contacting us, we're open from 8AM-11PM CST, Monday through Saturday.

Well this sucks. I'll try updating my PC. I've been looking into a Windows XP emulator for some older games that won't work... maybe it will work with that, I hope. Really don't want to have to buy/install a new graphics card.

Every time I've tried LiveChat, it has been during those times; at least 4-5 times I've kept it open 1-2 hours with nobody coming on ☹️   So who knows if I'll ever get the digital code, but thanks for all your help anyways!
