xbox 360 controller works but keeps saying to configure

I started the game with the 360 wireless active and immediatly an error message pops up saying controller not configured access settings to configure controller.  The issue is that the controller works just fine I can play the game, but the error message wont go away even though the controller is clearly working.  Ive tried swithing from regular 360 controller to wireless in the settings, Ive repaired reinstalled, Ive even unplugged my wireless keyboard and mouse because I read it might interfere.  But again controller works fine error message insists that it doesnt.
