Volume 8 is okay, but...
I'm still massively disappointed by the game in general. It's not that I don't like new content being added to the game, I like that, give us more of that!
The problem is just the absolute lack of soul. I did like Unbound when I first played it, but the more I played it, the more I just think, what in the flip has Criterion done with three years of development time they had besides turning the franchise into a really bad Burnout clone? And before you ask, no, Hot Pursuit 2010, Most Wanted, Rivals and 2015 that Criterion developed were actually good compared to Unbound.
The handling in Unbound is still the worst in the entire franchise. You can put a car onto full grip with TC enabled, drift initiation disabled and full downforce, and the car still handles like you were playing F1 2021 with 11-1 wing settings and minimal tire pressures. And also, the roads are heavily bumpy and undulated, so the chance of spinning out for legit zero reason is massive.
Another problem is that the single player gets zero new content save for the hot laps. Most new content gets locked behind Lakeshore Online, and if players don't have internet connection, they will never get the new cars. It's almost like Criterion wants to go back to the days of Rivals and 2015, turning NFS into an always online Burnout game, and that is no way to develop Need for Speed.
And I have even more things that Unbound needs, especially with the current volume, so here we go:
- Racers need to be able to use Pursuit technology as well. It worked absolutely fine with Hot Pursuit 2010 and Rivals, but the fact that only the cops can use Pursuit technology leaves the Racers defenseless, which makes it super unfair. And can I just emphasize that the cop cars are insanely OP? They all go 200+ mph and deal a massive amount of damage even though you just scratch them. Never have we seen a more unfair PVP mode ever.
- I myself said it before, and lots of other players expect it as well, there need to be AI opponents in Lakeshore Online once you start a playlist. This would make the Online more SP accessible, because you still have to put in the effort to get 1st, but you don't have to drive all by yourself. As a compensation, the payout needs to be increased as well, because doing playlists is still not as lucrative as doing Linkups. And also, what's the point of Drag races if you do them alone? And, I found out that if you start a Hot Pursuit playlist by yourself, the game will automatically end the event and give you the money for first place. Another important reason why we need AI in Lakeshore Online. And also, if nobody plays Unbound online anymore, you can still play it and make online progression if you desire.
The other things I'm asking for are rather minor, like reworking the gearing of the Mustang Dark Horse, because the 6th gear is incredibly long, making the car near inviable for S Class. In general, we need to be able to customize the gearing of cars because a lot of cars work much better with seven gears instead of eight, but we can't utilize it to our advantage because there is no option to change the gearing. It wouldn't even be that difficult to implement that. It worked out for Shift 2, so why not bring it back for Unbound?
Anyway, I'm still disappointed with Unbound. People keep complaining about several bugs and keep asking for new things, but nothing is being done to improve the game for all players, and that's sad.
Let's hope for the best, and maybe someone at Criterion will actually take the requests of the community to heart.
Good day,
Nico
