NFS Unbound makes GPU use less Power

Sometimes the game just makes your GPU draw less power as it normally should, resulting in low FPS and stuttering. Afterburner still shows 100% GPU Usage and 100% Power Limit but in my case my 3080 TUF OC only uses 170 Watt instead of ~340 resulting in low FPS. Alt-Tabbing fixes this most of the time. You can force this BUG by just making changes to your graphic settings (e.g. changing from SSAO to HBAO or using a different upscale (DLSS Quality or balanced). If the game can make my GPU draw less power as it should, I hope i cant make it use MORE than normal. I got shown a spike of over 370 Watt in afterburner after only 20 Minutes of gameplay, so much i have never seen before. I really hope the game does not destroy my GPU somehow.

This just happens when I click to edit my car in the garage. Frame Rate drops from 90 to 50, GPU using 100 Watts less but still showing 100% Usage. Alt-Tab out of the game and back in its smooth again.

    @Pointi1978

You can check if a similar situation arises with other games, this will help you confirm (or not) if your GPU cooling is working as expected.

    Thanks.

  • I may have found the culprit to be one of the newer GPU drivers. I reverted to the "Windows 10 default" version 516.94 and the performance is back to how it should be. Give it a shot.

Who talked about the problem being the cooling? My Asus TUF 3080 OC is working fine with no problems, very silent with a Temperature of a Maximum of 70 Degrees Celsius. When the bug happenes temperature goes down to 65 or 64 Degrees. It is using 100 Watts less after all.

My other games are fine. And I am not talking about minesweeper there. More like Cyberpunk 2077, Witcher 3 with the new raytracing update, heck, I even got Portal RTX to run decent on this card.

I better not start to talk about all the other bugs I found in this game after just 2 days of playing...

EDIT: How to 100% replicate this bug, it seems I did not make this clear:

Go to your garage to modify your car, in the screen where you get to free look around your car.

Go to the Options Menu from there (by pressing the Start Button on your controller I assume) and change 1 graphical setting, for example change Ambient Occlusion from AAO to HBAO or SSAO.

And yes, there are reports on reddit of users having the exact same issues. And a lot ppl are complaining about the game being horribly optimized or they are getting bad FPS, but not a lot of ppl are monitoring the power usage of their graphics cards.

I am just telling you here that this is the problem of the bad performance of the game, it is sometimes telling the graphics card sometimes to use less power than it should. After burner still reads 100% Power usage even if using only half of the normal maximal Watts.

  • I have the same issue, activating nvidia Reflex latency in on + boost helped quite a bit my rtx 2080 is now running between 180 to 200w ( tdp is 200w I'm on laptop) and fps is more stable even though not as good as it should be I guess

  • Actually the problem seems to reappear after a few playlist, no idea what triggers it, its pretty annoying

  • I have this exact issue since launch, multiple driver updates, different settings I tried everything yet my 3070 still uses at least 70-80w less so in return the game runs horrible. I haven't been able to find any real solution. Shame on you Criterion for this * up PC version.

Just got this game on my new 4070ti build, same issue, Power draw is 200+w for a few minutes then it drops to 100-130w and fps suffers. WTF is up with this game?

  • Anyone found a solution yet? Tried lots of things but the game is basically unplayable for me.

  • Same for me, 13700/4080/32G5600mhz. I can get around 140 FPS with dips to around 115 natively.
