Unbound won't use dedicated graphics card in dual GPU laptop

Product: Need for Speed: Unbound
Platform:PC
Summarize your bug Game refuses to use dedicated graphics card in dual GPU laptop no matter what I try
How often does the bug occur? Every time (100%)
Steps: How can we find the bug ourselves? 1. Launch the game 2. Open Task Manager 3. See that the game is using 100% of my iGPU and 0% of my dedicated graphics
What happens when the bug occurs? Game runs solely off integrated graphics, 95-100% steady usage on iGPU, 0% usage on dedicated graphics, terrible framerate and frame lag that gets worse over time
What do you expect to see? Game should use dedicated graphics card as specified in system settings

Putting this here too since I've narrowed it down to specifically a problem with Unbound. Here is a list of things I've already tried:
- forced Unbound to use Nvidia 1650 via Nvidia Control Panel

- forced Unbound to use Nvidia 1650 via Windows Settings

- forced Steam to use Nvidia 1650 via both methods

- forced every executable in the EA App / EA Launcher folder to use Nvidia 1650 via both methods

- updated graphics drivers (both gpus)
- wiped and clean reinstalled graphics drivers (both gpus)

- completely disabled iGPU via Device Manager (it still didn't use the Nvidia even when it was the only GPU detected by the system)

- looked for a dedicated-only mode in BIOS (there isn't one)

- updated windows

None of these methods have worked and the game continues to solely use the integrated GPU. Additionally, I cannot change the resolution of the game at all, the game launches in windowed while thinking its in fullscreen, and trying to change the fullscreen mode crashes the game (100% of the time).

I've tested with several other games and all of them use the 1650 with no issues.

Something else of note is that on a couple of occasions where the iGPU has stopped being 'GPU 1' in Task Manager temporarily, the game has instantly crashed with a DirectX error, which leads me to believe that its only in these scenarios that the Nvidia card gets used at all.

Current system specs:

Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3 15ACH6
Windows 11 Home, version 22H2

AMD Ryzen 5 5600H with Radeon Graphics

Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650ti Dedicated Graphics

24GB of RAM, 20GB usable

  • Narrowed it down further with a friend. This is specifically a problem with the new EA launcher and it's/the game's DRM. I also found someone having the same issue that got completely ignored for two weeks before saying screw it and not playing the game https://answers.ea.com/t5/Technical-Issues/The-game-uses-UHD-630-on-my-laptop-instead-of-GTX-1050-Ti-how/m-p/12100988#M542

This is to say I could pirate the game and literally have it run better than the version I bought. Thanks EA

  • @nessfoxxI found a solution hours after filing a ticket on help.ea.com, you need to reduce your vram for the igpu. That's literally it. I reduced it, for example, from 4gb to 1gb since I only use it for basic tasks and productivity apps. Since i did that, it seems that the game auto chooses the dgpu and runs fine
