Replays, Coach's challenge, and more suggestions for NHL24

Replays

To me it is ridiculous that the development team has not taken a look at this.

The replays in the NHL game make absolutely no sense. The focus should not be on the X-Factor ability but rather the goal itself. More often than not, the goal replay will feature something that happened 5-10 seconds prior to the game like a pass on blue line. As a player and hockey who wants to appreciate the scored goal, this replay has 0 value.

Coach's challenge

Aka. coin toss. It is nothing else but at least it is consistent with current state of the real NHL officiating 🙂

Some calls, like goaltender interference, should not be called 100% of the time. In some cases the refs are sitting on the blue line and would not always make that call.

Consider adding the ability of refs simply missing some calls, and allow players to trigger coach's challenge within in first few seconds after getting scored on. Then go through the current "review" process.

What would also be good is return of the old review camera. In previous games, the reviews would show camera from above the goal. Now you get a shot from afar, sometimes behind a ref or a player..

Tipping

The tipping is completely random. The player has no control whatsoever - just keep spamming the goal and hope the player will tip it in.

In real hockey, tipping is combination of precision and timing, not luck. The tips are timed and aimed. Although this would raise the skill level it would be a good thing to add, perhaps by pressing analog and indicating which direction you want to tip the puck.

    Hey there, @Gradonnu

Thanks for all the feedback here. As far as Coach's Challenge goes, I think that is going to be a difficult one to implement. It would certainly be cool to have and the team is aware of the requests for it. So, hopefully, they find a way to get it added.

    @Gradonnu thanks for your suggestions!

There are a lot of useful things written here that I would also like to see in the game!

Replays were good back in NHL 2016. They showed the goal twice from different angles and in slow motion. Now everything is somehow accelerated and cropped. And as you noticed, there is an emphasis on the X-Factor. But it's much more interesting to watch replays, like in real hockey.

Coach's challenge is an interesting idea. There is such a thing in the NFL series from EA Sports. But even if we refuse to introduce the manual challenge function into the game, but it would be nice to make a challenge, as in the aforementioned NHL 2016, where the goal will be counted or rejected, it was a mystery until the replay was shown and the judge did not issue the final verdict. It was exciting and realistic!

As for Tipping, it is also said correctly. Everything happens to me from match to match: either my players are great at correcting the puck into the net, or the puck just crashes into my teammates. The mechanics themselves are interesting, but it would be cool if they developed and transformed it.

But again, these are some of the best suggestions for game improvements I've read in a while. Everything is concise and factual.
  • How would it be any more difficult than random ai penalties? Seems like an excuse for something you guys can't do.
