Late Hits: No Penalty

I’ve noticed late hits aren’t called penalties. This has been around since 23 maybe?

The clip attached demonstrates this. The player was hit a fair amount of time after the puck left his stick. My question is: Was it purposely created by the studio for these hits to not be called penalties?

If the hits in real life were the same as the game they'd be a few players doing time for attempted murder.

Amazingly I've yet to see a 5 minute penalty for misconduct in the game.

Its something I highlighted last year about there being no 5 minute penalties other than for fighting. I've played over 500 games and not seen one.

EASHL main here. This is one thing I have been saying for a bit now. While I will say that hitting is more difficult in this game, it is not impossible. That being said, when someone does connect, you can be down for up to 10 seconds at times which is fine with me as it rewards someone who makes a good hit. But if I get rid of the puck early and than up to a second or more later, am getting plastered on the boards without a call (or a way to defend myself) than that makes it unbalanced for the offense. Now, either I have to deliberately hold onto the puck just so I can use the reverse hit option on the opposing player before giving it off or pass the puck off with no way to defend myself and potentially being taken out of the play for an extended period of time. As a Defenseman, this could cause an odd man rush just because I made the right play of passing the puck off quick. This is why I think we need to restrict the hitting timer to be lower OR, and this might be a mechanical change which wouldn't happen I imagine, the ability to reverse or brace for hits like was mentioned in past games' controls list with the "brace" option.

Nothing is more frustrating than giving up an Odd-man rush or a breakaway even because you gave the puck off early at the point only for a winger to hit you over a second later with no call and you are stuck waiting seconds to get back up.

The time it takes to get up after a hit is frustrating and more so when it’s a late hit.

I find it odd we are more vulnerable without the puck than with it. So a reverse hit or brace option without the puck sounds like a great idea tbh (If I do this now I end up slashing with skill stick controls).

Frustrating yes sure but I mean some big hits with that kind of speed going into one another and it makes sense for that long get up timer. They have a perk called "shrug it off" for this reason whether you agree with it or not. Again the biggest issue like I and you described, is we are more vulnerable without the puck than with it. Something like just pressing LT/L2 to activate vision control to avoid the hit when you don't have the puck would be great. Or maybe it is in the game and something we can do but has never really been mentioned before like the deke cancelling (which may be a glitch or not, not sure)

Can we also fix the Injury negates penalty. Been around couple of years now. When someone clearly check you from behind to boards, or late charging and you get injured, the penalty will never be called. It’s like this game can only handle one thing at time…

  • There's a difference between finishing your check, and a late hit.   Up until this year, unless you ran truculence you'd get a penalty for interference almost every time you finished a check.   This year you're finally allowed to finish your check like you can IRL without a penalty.    I'd rather have it this way than the overly sensitive way it's been the last 4 iterations.   What they need to do is cut the time of "winded get ups" down by 75%.   They take WAY too long, almost two in game minutes

I hadn’t thought about this. I don’t want penalties given out for finishing a check either. Though, I don’t think “finishing the check” would apply to the attached clip. I believe their check animation started after the puck was passed.

EA_Aljo Is there any insight you can share regarding how late hits/finishing checks are in relation to penalty calls?

I don't have much insight into this. I can tell you that we're aware of these reports and it is being looked into. As with most anything, it's not a simple fix. Fixing this can also cause bigger issues. So, it's something we're going to need to continue investigating until a good fix can be found.

  • To be as fair as possible, I wouldn't want a penalty being called on this specific hit.  And I am saying this as a forward who doesn't hit much, but absorbs a ton.  Yes puck possession has changed but really its only a second later and in online games with input and response delay, I'd much rather this be called "finishing your check".

That being said, interference penalties have not been called as strictly this year in my experience.  I've seen much later hits (or instances where my teammate never had the puck, it was on the opposite side of the ice) let go with no penalty.

The input response delay is a good point, especially as it relates to players that use skill stick or total control. I think the hitting players were using total control and weren’t able to cancel their hit on the play.

I’ll try and share more clips of late hits and maybe there can be a happy medium.

  • It's actually not too dissimilar from real life hockey. You generally will see players being hit after passing the puck. Coaches just call it finishing your check. The difference is that those hits generally aren't severe. They're usually lighter hits along the boards just to make sure your opponent knows you're there. In this game, the vast majority of hits I see are massive Trouba-style hospitalization bodychecks.
