Perhaps a late addition to this list, but if not in NHL 26, try for NHL 27: The ability to remap or customize your controller buttons. For example: I hate protecting the puck using R3. I feel it wears down my thumbstick too much. I want to press and hold X to protect instead, like the old days.
I really don't see that version of puck protect returning. This was something we had complaints about for years because it enabled unrealistically protecting the puck while backskating. The way it's implemented currently is a lot more realistic.

It was just an example I gave. I remember on PC versions back in EA’s heyday that I was able to implement my own control scheme by remapping virtually every button. My thumbs didn’t like the placement of certain buttons doing certain functions on presets. Remapping allowed me to be feel more comfortable on my controller. Here’s another example: instead of having the defence set up to check using triangle or circle, I could change it to my right thumb stick up and down (instead of simple stick checks). Right on the d-pad is to change lines in BAP. I’d like to set that to circle. Changing controller button functions in their presets have me pressing wrong buttons at the wrong time all the time because change gets difficult as I get older.

You can remap the buttons on both consoles. It's just not something you can do in-game. So, unless your controller supports multiple profiles, the remapped buttons would apply to everything else as well. I think it might be more difficult to remap puck protect since it only happens when hustling and turning.
