Online games lagging and disconnecting

I've been playing quite a bit of HUT and Online Versus lately. This month has been unbearable. I figured it was my connection.

So I called my ISP. I got a new modem and TWO technicians have come to fix my issues. They removed a splitter and moca filter because of SNR issues. They have confirmed I should no longer have issues.

It's still happening. I also learned that two of my friends are also having the same issues. Game will lag, freeze, then you will get booted. Sometimes you get a loss and sometimes it doesn't even show the game even existed in your recent games list.

I am confident this is not a problem on my end as I have had my ISP do everything they can.

How do we resolve this issue?

    Hey thanks for answering.

The console ping is when you go to your console dashboard and run a speed test. This will give you a ping.

As for the HUT in game ping, you wont get matched up with players above the value you set in the menu.

I would suggest 40, as most local games run at 10-33. Over 40 you end up playing on the other servers (east/west).

By the next day, I no longer had any issues with the connection dropping, and HUT was running "normally" (if you know what I mean).

cogsx86 I don't know what you mean by "console ping", but yes - a console is wired to main modem, fiber internet. In game ping 31-32 ms (flat line). NAT 2, DNS usually Google, Cloudflare or OpenDNS, but sometimes I experiment with others. Location: Central Europe.

Yep, but that almost never affects my in game ping, regardless of whether it's set to 20, 80, or ANY.

We're not aware of any issues at the moment, but will keep monitoring for them. There are some additional troubleshooting suggestions here. It would also be good to contact your ISP to see if they are noticing any issues with your connection.

Aljo, I know the drill :) I do these steps, and more, whenever connection issues show up - especially if you’ve been playing NHL online since 2010.

For now, I’m afraid to risk starting a ranked match, as I don’t know if I’ll get disconnected again and relegated to a lower rank. I hope the issues clear up by this evening.

Hello. Let's see if a thorough power cycle of your equipment will help. Please try these steps:

    1. Unplug your modem/router for 2 minutes
    2. Hard restart your console by holding down the power button until it turns off
    3. Power it all up and try playing again

Let me know if this helps or not. Thanks!

In the last 90 minutes, I’ve been disconnected from the servers three times during HUT matches — that’s as many times as usually happens over the course of six months. On top of that, when reconnecting to the server (returning to HUT), the loading icon spins for a long time, and you have to wait a while for the connection to be established. So, something is definitely going on with the servers. I’ve checked, and the issue isn't on my end; I even changed my DNS settings before the last match. (EUROPE)

Hi there. Online Versus games don't take place on our servers. Those use a peer to peer connection where you or your opponent are the host. If you're disconnecting there frequently, most likely there's an issue with your connection. We're not aware of any issues, but will keep monitoring for them.

Are you on a wired or wireless connection? Also, what region are you and your friends in?

That sounds brutal. A few things I’d check/document so EA can narrow down whether this is local, ISP routing, or EA server-side:

Are you hardwired by Ethernet or on Wi-Fi?

What console are you on? PS5, Xbox Series X/S, etc.

What region/location are you playing from?

What is your in-game ping when the match starts?

    What is your console ping?

Have you tested your modem/router ping separately? Not just download speed, but actual latency, packet loss, and jitter.

What is your NAT type? Ideally it should be Open, or at least not Strict.

Are the disconnects happening only in NHL/HUT/Online Versus, or in other online games too?

If your friends are getting the same lag → freeze → boot pattern, especially with games disappearing from recent games or randomly counting as losses, that points more toward server/routing instability than one person’s home setup.

Would be good if everyone having this issue posts their console, location, NAT type, wired/wireless setup, and average ping to narrow this down.
