NHL 27 Issues

It's genuinely impressive how EA manages to make an NHL game feel less like actual hockey with every new release. At this point, I'm convinced the developers have never watched a real hockey game. The AI teammates are absolutely clueless. Line changes take an eternity, defensive positioning is nonexistent, and the hitting physics make absolutely no sense. How is a player chasing me from behind able to completely flatten me with a body check? In what world does that happen consistently in real hockey? Playing defense feels like a constant 1v5 because your AI teammates have zero awareness. They'll abandon the defensive zone while the opposing team has possession of the puck five feet in front of your net. Instead of covering passing lanes, protecting the slot, or actually playing their positions, they skate around aimlessly like they've never played hockey before. And what happened to all that NHL EDGE technology EA advertised? What exactly was the point? Not a single player actually resembles their real-life counterpart in terms of skating, tendencies, physicality, or playstyle. Apparently, having a high overall rating means you can defy the laws of physics. Just because Celebrini is rated 95 overall doesn't mean he should be able to absolutely demolish my 6'7" defenseman like he's delivering a hit stick in Madden. Size, weight, momentum, and positioning should actually matter. The collision system is another complete joke. NHL players don't fold into a ball every time someone gives them the slightest shove. Not every bit of contact needs to result in some ridiculous, exaggerated ragdoll animation. Hockey is a physical sport, but there's a massive difference between realistic physicality and whatever EA thinks they're simulating. Every time I launch this game, it feels more like a chore than something I'm supposed to enjoy. The frustrating part is that I genuinely love hockey, and hockey games are naturally addictive. I keep coming back because I want to play hockey, not because this is a good representation of the sport. Almost everything that happens on the ice feels disconnected from how hockey is actually played. If I were an actual NHL player watching my sport represented this poorly, I'd be embarrassed. The lack of hockey IQ, realistic player movement, defensive structure, and basic understanding of the sport is astonishing for a franchise that's been around this long. Year after year, EA prioritizes flashy gimmicks, marketing buzzwords, and features nobody asked for while fundamental gameplay problems remain completely untouched. Instead of improving the actual hockey experience, they continue building on a foundation that desperately needs fixing. The most frustrating part is that this franchise has so much potential. Hockey is an incredibly fast, physical, and intelligent sport, yet EA consistently fails to capture what makes it special. And don't even get me started on the goaltending animations. Why does every goalie feel the need to perform a full gymnastics routine whenever a puck comes anywhere near the crease? They're constantly diving, spinning, flopping around, and throwing themselves completely out of position for absolutely no reason. A routine save somehow turns into a highlight-reel desperation attempt because apparently every goalie is more concerned with earning style points than actually stopping the puck. Real NHL goaltenders rely on positioning, angles, rebound control, and efficient movement. They don't need to do a backflip every time someone takes a wrist shot from the blue line. It's like EA thinks the more dramatic an animation looks, the more realistic it is. Half the time, the goalie creates a scoring opportunity out of absolutely nothing simply because the game decided it was time for another ridiculous animation.

I don't want another gimmick. I don't want another marketing campaign promising revolutionary gameplay. I just want a hockey game that actually plays like hockey.

And somehow, that seems to be too much to ask.

Garbage game.

I really hate wishing bad things on people but with what you just said, I wish ALL the NHL players refuse to have their "image" in the game or any team refuses to have anything NHL related in the game until EA makes a realistic hockey game for its player base, the way WE want it.

  • I 100% agree. A friend of mine, a former NHL player, said he also agrees after watching me play this.

  • you can say that again brother. unfortunately, what WE want in the game in not what EAs "vision for the game" is I guess.
