Charter Spectrum and EA Servers

Good Evening,

For a few years now there has been an issue that I have had that seems to coincide with me moving into a new home and being stuck with Spectrum internet. I've played NHL 6v6 since 08 when it was just OTP lobbies so you could say I have some familiarity with NHLs online experience. I am also an IT Infrastructure Engineer so I am certain my home network is configured correctly. I am hardwired, I've reset router/modem, opened ports, the whole nine yards.

I have a very inconsistent connection to Ohio, QC, and half the time Virginia. Its gotten to the point where QC server is almost unplayable for me. Ping all game goes from 35-75 with no consistency. Same issue just not as often to the Ohio server.

My hustle button just doesn't seem to work in half my games, I've tried new controllers, issue persists. This has been an issue on Xbox One, the One X, and now the Series X with multiple controllers between the consoles. I have had my home re-wired with new Cat cables a few months ago, issue remains. Skating can feel like my guy is a Lincoln Towncar even though hes a 5'7 dangler. My passes miss even tho I am aiming at people. Its almost as if my controller inputs aren't accurately being sent or delayed. I play franchise mode/practice mode and none of these issues happen. I notice when skating that my guy will make awkward turns, and when I pause and look at the replay my stick positioning can be very different than what I am actually doing with my controller. In some cases the left stick almost looks to be the reverse of what I am actually doing.

I recently have spoken to others in the LeagueGaming.com NHL community who also have Spectrum and they all to a person have the same exact problem. We are spread out geographically, yet we all have an inconsistent and at time unplayable connection. 

I have spoken to spectrum and given them a tracert to the Ohio server and they assure me that the issue is after the handoff from Spectrum.

I know I have asked on this forum before and I was directed back to Spectrum but I am just looking to see if this can get fixed or do I just have to quit playing NHL.

    Hi there, @WayneKenov2233.

    Can you get me some video showing the issues you're facing? It would be good to see the problem with passing you mentioned too. Make sure the controller overlay is visible so I can see where you're aiming and where the pass is going.

    If you haven't tried alternate DNS settings yet, that may help. From the Xbox One screen, go to Settings > Network > Advanced settings > DNS settings > Manual. (If Settings doesn't appear on the home screen, select My Games & Apps, then Settings). From there, enter the Primary DNS as "208.67.222.222" and the Secondary DNS as "208.67.220.220". If that doesn't help, try using the google DNS servers which are: primary alt number 8.8.8.8 - secondary alt number 8.8.4.4. Let me know what happens. Thanks!

  • I'll try different DNS servers and report back tonight. As for videos, there's nothing really to capture. All the replay shows is stick position so unless I have a camera recording my hands on the controller synced up with gameplay its not gonna be much help.

    Above is a play where starting around 20 seconds in I started hustling by clicking down the left stick and my guy never hustles. I pressed it multiple times, I tried holding it down, and yet my hustle didn't work. It almost looked like my guy was skating slower.

    @WayneKenov2233 

    I assume you're the LD? It doesn't look like hustle is being initiated. I know you mentioned trying new controllers also. Just to be sure, have you made sure they have the latest firmware update?

    Something you can show in a video is the aim of your passes. Next time you see one go in a direction you didn't aim, try to get a replay of it. If you hit Y/Triangle during the replay, the playback controls are removed and a controller overlay is displayed. That will show where you're aiming so we can compare it to where the pass went.

  • And yes I was the LD in that clip. And yes my controller is up to date and this same issue happens with different controllers that I have tried. The series X controller, Elite Series 2, etc.

    In EASHL 6v6, I thought the sticks in the replay aren't capturing whats happening locally. I thought it was showing what the game server is receiving as an input. If that is the case then the replay wouldn't help I don't think.

    @WayneKenov2233 

    Can you run the test again and follow each step? You're not hitting the Poll button. Also, could you run a separate test with the domain noted in the instructions?

    You need to go into the instant replay screen to see the controls I'm talking about. It shows the inputs of the puck carrier.

  • I attached polling to both easo and ohio nhl server.

    And what I'm trying to explain to you is the controls in the replay don't matter because they are showing what the game server is receiving as an input. So if there is an issue before it reaches the server its not going to help unless I had a simultaneous video of my hands on my actual controller to match up with what the game is seeing.

    @WayneKenov2233 

    Without that replay, we're not going to be able to determine any issues with passing. So, unfortunately, the best I can recommend is that you be more precise with your aim. Let me know if you change your mind.

    As far as your results go, where are you located? I can't confirm that is actually one of our servers in your second ping. You also only sent 32 packets. It would be good to see 100 instead. The first test doesn't look bad though. Are you able to go into offline modes and use hustle? Also, does it sometimes work or does it never activate?

  • @WayneKenov2233 Yup I’m 5.7 and my game is the same including player delay.. I think the servers can’t handle all these players and now that LG gas started it got worse

    Yea I agree. And asking for video evidence is pointless in this case because the game isn't going to look like it's lagging. Very frustrating for EAs customers.
