Will origin continue to work on Mac devices 10.13.6 and/or older?

Moving into April 2025, the origin app is being replaced by the EA desktop app, an announcement which is very much apparent throughout the origin app.

As a Mac 10.13.6 user what does this mean?

I'm unable to download the EA app due to the age/capability on my device, so will origin continue to work on older devices?

There isn't much outlined regarding this and I'm worried that the packs/games that I have paid for will no longer work.

  • @f1shb0w1  No, Origin won't work at all anymore, that's the point of the announcement.  And unless the EA App receives an update, it probably won't work on your device either, unfortunately.

I wouldn't ever recommend forcing an unsupported operating system on a Mac, but I do know it's possible to install Catalina on a 2011 model because I've seen the results.  So if you're willing to take the risk that you might need to wipe your device to fix it, this may be a worthwhile experiment.

Other than that, you won't be able to play Sims 4 anymore on this Mac.

  • Same issue. My mac is old and won't survive an update (also it can't stand the size of the jump in os file). How are we meant to keep playing? Is there a way to play offline or smth?

@ChelySparkle  You could try taking your device offline before opening Origin, each and every time, but I'm not sure that would work.  And it might work for a while but not long-term, like you might need to sign in while online again after a while, which wouldn't be possible.

What year is your Mac?  You can see it under About This Mac.  Anything from 2012 or newer can take at least macOS Catalina, which is the minimum requirement for the EA App.

As for the size of the newer OS, it's not that much bigger from one version to the next-newer one.  If you can't even download the installer, then you really don't have enough free space on your Mac for everyday use and should address that whether you're updating the OS or not.  It's best to always have at least 20-25 GB free for health and performance reasons.  With too little free space, your Mac will slow down considerably under load.
