Spore on Steam

So for the past several hours I have been trying to fix a problem that wouldn't let me access Spore.  The message would say, "The data directory is missing or corrupt. [1004]"

After try and try again, I found myself looking at the frequent conversations in spore, and pages of pages of people said they were having this problem.  Them I stumbled on a comment that said to contact EA.  I have no desire on paying another $20 for this game.  Is their any possible way I can get it still.  I do have an Origin account, but have not downloaded Origin yet.

    I just bought spore via Steam, installed the game and got the same problem when I started spore. While I started to search I also tried to start Spore Galactic Adventures and the C&C partpack, which started up normally. I restarted my computer and tried to start Spore again and it worked.... Now that Spore starts, I have another problem: I can't log in / register the game. and it's blaming my internet-connection... which I'm using now... - I created an Origin account (I can login on their page with that) guess I haven't activated something but don't know what, help! :D
