So your solution is to pay EA again... how does that make sense, surely EA should just fix the problem and GIVE those affected steam users an EA version, after all they have already paid for it once.

That's just not going to happen; At least not right now. This only makes sense if you want to experience the game as it was intended to be and it currently one of the only fool proof 'solutions'.
The state of the game on Steam is not acceptable; Both EA and Valve should be held to account. That being said though, mod support, online functionality, no DRM are all there on GOG. Up to you if you think it's worth buying the collection again.
