EA Needs To Go Back To Tiger Woods'14 Gameplay. Here's Why.

I still say that EA Sports PGA Tour Tiger Woods'14 was the best golf game Ever. I'm sure a lot of you agree. I decided to look at the manual to TW'14 to show you what I mean. Besides the obvious features that were way better such as; having replays, Gameface, ball striking, swing mechanics, etc.... listed below are a few specifics things I wish they would go back to.

1. SWING (from the manual) "At higher difficulty levels, you must execute draws and fades by swinging your club diagonally (left stick The results are more sensitive to mishits. Before you swing, notice the Swing Plane is displayed in the lower left hand corner. This Swing Plane is the path you should follow with the swing stick for your backswing and follow through. If it displays at an angle, then you should swing diagonally. If you are off plane, the club head arc will not align with the swing arc and the controller will vibrate. When you are off plane, you will mishit the ball and result in an undesirable shot."

EA tried to do this but totally messed it up by returning to center instead of having to continue angle on swing.

2. SWING SPEED (from the manual) "Play close attention to the pace of your swing. Adjust the speed of both the backswing and follow through to perfect the timing of your swing. You can extend your backswing and speed up the forward swing to give an extra power boost. Look to the Swing Feedback Heads Up Display (HUD) in the lower-left corner of the screen after your swing for an analysis of your backswing and follow through."

3. PRE-SWING STANCE (from the manual) "Adjust your stance to create unique and dynamic shots. Move the right stick to open your stance and add fade right or draw left for right-handed golfers and fade left or draw right for left-handed golfers. Move the right stick to move the ball forward or backward in your stance, which alters the height of the ball’s trajectory."

We need the stance meter back instead of shot type. Just like real golf, ball flight should be determined on how you hit the ball and Not by picking out a specific shot type from a list of different shots. Do they think we are stupid?

4. BALL STRIKE METER - This is a big one. (from the manual) "Utilize the Strike Meter to dig the ball out of bunkers or to pick the ball cleanly when it’s in the rough. Fat or thin hits are not favorable and affect the shot power and ball trajectory. You can modify where the clubface strikes the ball with the right stick to gain greater control over the height of your shot or to move your club left/right on the ball. New this year, you also need to adjust left or right on the Strike Meter to account for sidehill lies. Alter your contact to suit the current circumstances. Hit under the ball to pop it up high, or hit near the top of the ball for a low shot."

This is a huge thing that was so good about TW'14 that I wish they would use again. This makes it a little harder but much more realistic like it should be. You had to move the crosshairs on the ball with your left stick and hold it still during your swing to get the results you wanted. Today's game is just way to easy. Also, the swing plain in TW'14 was way more sensitive. So it was possible to actually hit a bad shot.

Like I said, besides the obvious things that I listed at the start, these specific features are what EA really missed the boat on. Also, like I stated many times in the past, the ball physics are terrible in the new game. No penalty for hitting in rough or bunkers, plus, as stated by other members here, the ball rolls the same speed when rolling through a bunker or deep rough. ???. I also noticed that the trajectory of the ball flight isn't very realistic either. It's too fast or something. What do you think?

I do like playing this game and it's a good golf game, but besides the excellent graphics, it's nowhere near as good as Tiger Woods'14.

I would like to look like a normal woman again, a petite redhead golfer looking like myself. In this EA game, I look like a bag of potato. We need female devs for this game, and those awful black socks. YUCK!

I am blown away that EA as well as 2k23 do not have more options for facial creation.  They will never be able to cover what people want to do with presets, whether players want to create themselves, or create Phil Mickelson or Sergio Garcia.  When you could actually modify the eyes, nose, cheeks, jaw, chin, etc like you mentioned in Tiger Woods 14, one could really come close to if not create a ringer for whomever they were trying to create.  Its amazing how far backwards this game is, and its 2023 for crying out loud.  Create a player is freaking horrendous on these games.

In TW14, I remembered creating Gal Gadot and my friend created Kevin Hart. Voices were also available and the Kevin Hart avatar perfectly had his voice as well. I remembered using a voice similar to Stephanie McMahon for Gal since her accent was not available. The WWE 2K face capture is even more accurate. The avatar can look exactly like me or anyone else like Ana De Armas or Nelly Korda.

There are a small selection of latina avatars available. Regardless of who I create, the character looks more like Daisy Ridley. Too bad there are no golf clubs looking like a lightsaber. In WWE 2K and TW14, it is more possible to create someone looking like me.

It is super disappointing to hear how many of you are struggling with the create a player part of the game. It did seem to me that we took a huge step forward in the early to mid 2010s on this so it really does tell you how lazy/ignorant/inept our game developers are to not even be able to produce something that was done 9 years ago. Why can’t we create our own faces? Could it be that difficult of an engine?

I think if a copy and paste of TW14 was done, it might save the headaches. This year, the developers did something to reinvent the wheel like adding RNG and forgetting game face; they also reinvented NHL 24 be removing hybrid controls at launch. There is one big difference between NHL 24 and PGA Tour; the Hybrid controls got added back to NHL 24 while nothing has changed with PGA Tour. It is obvious there is more investment and sales with NHL 24 than PGA Tour.

Unfortunately, they can't do that because it's on the old Tiger Woods engine.  If they would have been able to copy and paste from the old TW engine to Frosbite, it would have saved them a lot of work, and EA Rory would have a lot of contents. This is the problem with starting from scratch with a new engine, and why HB/2K are still using the old Unity engine for their game. It's a lot easier this way, and they can keep all the courses made by customers with the courses creator.  They will probably lose all those courses with a new engine.

You would think this would be a valid argument. But what do you say when 2K deliberately removed the ability to add weight to your golfer. It was available in 2K2019.

And while I was reviewing all the old 2K games... 2K2019 is really playable with everything disabled. The only problem is that it is far to easy to hit shots straight. I really enjoy the putting without the green grids.

@PalomaMarvel24 And don't forget the no replays. I still can not comprehend that the devs decided that it would be a good idea to not have replays in this game. Every other game has replay's except for this one. That's basic stuff.

Agree with that. There are more that can be done in TW14 that can’t be done on current game.

    1) Ability to adjust wind speed. TW14 can change wind speed from calm to gale force. It is so bad I had to put up with Gale Force winds in Career mode at Cardi Creek (aka Wolf Creek) in current game. The gale winds causes ball physics to resemble Cardi B throwing the mic.

    2) In TW14, I can hit the green in a long approach shot using a 3-iron or 4-iron. This is almost impossible in the current game. In current game my golfer is more like Aaron Judge when I use a 3-iron for long approach shot and misses the green by miles.
