Can't transfer game to my new Android phone

I can't seem to get my progress transferred to my new phone. The game is still active on the old phone so I know it's still there. I registered my email address and did a force sync. 

On the new phone, I started the game, tapped the wrench and the controller icon, and I'm pretty sure it displayed my email address in the process which I tapped (assuming since I was logged into my google account on the phone that it would just sync). It's not synced and I can't even figure out how to confirm the email address it's linked to. I was hesitant to register my email on the new phone because I thought there might be a possibility it would sync the new version to my account, overwriting and deleting the old game. But since I couldn't figure out anything else, I went for it. It just gave me back a message that the email address could not be registered. Any ideas?
