Thanks so much for the detail of your explanation. I guess I should be spending jewels on keeping a winning streak going on. I really appreciate your help.

No problem. Glad to help.
I did, however, forget to mention that you REALLY need to be selective when picking your Battlez, rather than continue playing just for the sake of it.
By that I mean that if you find yourself at a much higher risk of losing an unacceptably high percentage of matches, you should not be afraid to step back and sit out an entire week. (I have done that three times since Battlez started.) During that time out you can build up your gems a little while waiting for the next tournament in the hope it will be better suited to your stronger plants.
On the other hand, if you find you're doing well, you should go for it and milk the game for all you can get.
I obviously can't tell you which tournaments to make the most of, or which ones to step away from. You'll need to trust your own judgment on that.
At first I limited myself to a fixed maximum number of gems that I would pay to retain my streak. Back then I would give up a streak if it was going to cost me anything over 100 gems in a single transaction to keep going.
During those periods I was gradually building up the power of my plants so my wins to losses ratio became increasingly favourable and I found it was taking longer to reach my limit each time.
In the beginning I might get to a streak of 50 to 80. (Depending on how difficult the tournaments were) before surrendering the streak. It then got to perhaps 100 to 150 before I hit my limit again.
My point is that you SHOULD set yourself a limit that you're comfortable with and not exceed it. (It's like going to a casino, where you enter in the hope of winning big but have a set amount in mind that you're willing to lose before quitting.)
Over time your wins to losses ratio will improve and you will get longer and longer streaks before reaching your set limit. Along the way your plants are becoming ever more powerful and require less sun to deploy. They also refresh faster and the speed in which you can get more plants out is often a major factor between winning and losing.
The bottom line is to always play within your limitations at the start and continue doing so until such time as the odds gradually swing in your favour. By that time you'll know whether or not to push your gem cost limit up a bit by balancing the cost against the improved rewards to be gained by taking the streak a little higher.
Don't use up gems unnecessarily by chasing the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow right from the start. Bide your time and wait until the rainbow's end is a lot closer, then go for it.
