That happened to me as well and in my case it was definitely caused by an "unstable" internet connection. I've stopped playing in the subway when I'm close to a reward and wait until I'm at home (WiFi)...
@PowerToss Under the new system, losing the coin reward and getting reset to the easy competition is not that terrible. Losing a 5x pinata sucks big time.
