Even without variants, BfN Ops could be so much better than they are. One of PvZ's strengths is the amazing variety of plants and zombies, as even just cosmetic changes (like the pirate themed summonables in GW), just show that extra little attention to detail that made the GW games stand out in a rather bland multiplayer shooter landscape (with some notable exceptions like Paladins and TF2) that we've dealt with for years now. It was so disappointing to lack Karate zombies for the Zen Sensei zombie, the vampire zombies for Baron Von Bats and so on. GW2 took away the cool intro scenes GW has for the super waves, but BfN took even more away, and is a large part of why it never felt as good as the GW games; it lacked that special spark that made the other games stand out among the crowd.
And some of them are just weird choices like zombies get yeti imp while plants only have dandelion despite the fact that exploding imp is IN THE GAME and would be more fair.
Lets create a new unique imp enemy for the pve who will never be used in the game again.
Giga Torchwood's model is straight from gw2 yet they couldnt bring over any other character and had to redesign everyone else? Seriously why is doom shroom purple again?

And I really despise the TV Heads and WIldflowers for so many reasons. While I feel a lot of the new characters need some serious tuning and changes to be brought to a new shooter that I still want to see, their overall concepts are at least fun and interesting, but not those two. They make PvE less fun than it should be and them being made playable was a terrible idea as they are obnoxious to play against, they lack cosmetics, and they feel so bland compared to the rest of the roster; they're just filler and it shows.

@stukapooka The Turbo Twister nerf does make sense, I don't think that Ops mode as a whole has been updated much since the game's original launch. I've been paying more attention to plant and zombie variants that appear on Crazy as that is the difficulty that I have been playing. I would assume that you do not see character variants as often and not until later rounds when you are playing on Easy or Normal.
@Iron_Guard8 I gotta agree, the lacking variety of plants and zombies in BfN Ops was disappointing, along with general content that Ops in that game had to offer. I remember trying Ops for the first time in BfN and being confused why there were only 5 rounds and where the evacuation wave was. The Super Boss Waves in GW2 are always exciting to get as they are themed according to the boss that you rolled, for instance, the Zen Sensei Super Boss Wave contains lots of Karate Zombies and even a Champion Karate Zombie. There's even a challenge round where Pirate themed Browncoats and Captain Deadbeard variants spawn. GW2 Ops has much more replayability and is much more memorable compared to BfN Ops.
