The chomper is a sneaky character, so trying to sneak up on people is a good idea, or to go for single zombies if possible.
You'll have to be careful of engineers, as they are your hard counter. When they are sprinting, they can't be eaten and they can stun you.
I'd suggest the "chomp thing" upgrade and "vampire spikeweed" upgrade to keep you alive longer. The "rough patch" upgrade is also good if you keep getting vanquished.
@TheSprinter85 I would love the Vampiric Spikeweed, but it's so rare I ever get any trapped Zombies, I feel it's not really worth it. I'll definitely add those perks and see what else I can fit into the slots.
