I'm currently experiencing this same problem. Spent hrs on the phone to EA help and they just ran me through the problem solving solutions listed on their website. My best guess is that either I don't have PS+ (even though I can't even make it to single player or couch co-op) or, the hard copy of the game didn't attach itself to my PSN account or EA/Origin account and there isn't any activation/redeem codes in the case.

It is true that you do have to log into the servers, even if you just plan on playing solo and in PvE content. As a result, if you don't have PlayStation+, then that may be what is keeping you from being able to log in. Are you able to get PS+ and then give it a try from there?
