I have the same issue. I bought this game because it was advertised by EA as every mode being playable in split screen co-op.
From the game's website's own FAQ's it states clearly
"
What are the multiplayer options?
There is up to 24-player online multiplayer and up to 4-player online co-op. Or if you prefer to play with friends locally, you can play with or against a friend in split screen across every mode on Xbox One and PS4. That’s right – from the comfort of your own couch you and a friend can enjoy every mode of the game in split screen, and even play on opposing sides! You will be able to play co-operatively with a friend online, but it will not be split screen."

This really annoys me because I did buy this game for my daughter who is young, but loves this game. She doesn't like playing competitively, she's not that experienced. I read all about this game and EA gave me the impression that the entire game could be played split screen as my daughter wants me to play with her. We go to the quests and Davebot won't let us get the quests in split screen.
Pretty bogus and false advertising by EA.

"co-operatively with a friend online, but it will not be split screen." That's from your quote.

Sorry this is a very old thread. But I've just run into the same problem with my son. The quote (still) clearly says that every mode is playable in split screen. The quote that Violet pointed out is unrelated and refers to online multiplayer not being split screen, which is of course correct. Local split screen multiplayer should be available for every mode including backyard battleground missions. How exactly is this not the case? Why hasn't the description at least been updated? I've bought this game for this missing advertised feature.
