Ice variants

I wouldn’t to bring this topic up to see how you guys feel about this variant.  I have a love hate relationship with them personally.  Are they useful, yes.  Great for imp prominent rounds and bolt blaster control.  I tend to struggle with consistent freezing due to my internet provider and no other options.  The occasions where my ping is under 60 they are usually fun to play.  However I rarely see them in multiplayer.

It’s an old topic but relevant, the initial freeze nerf to the variant ages ago was needed at the time, but not to everyone......obviously.  With recent attention from developers since the beginning of the summer I’m surprised it’s hasnt been addressed.  The damage and freeze effect are borderline on nerf or buff if adjusted up or down.  That being said I think the ice cactus could use some love in the rate of fire department.  AC Parry needs a freeze upgrade sooner and a tad more potent.  The rest are ok-ish and I dare not comment on Frozen Citron in reliving the nightmare.

  • I've played and love the Goalie Star a lot. He is pretty solid. What seems to be weak at first turns out to be really strong once used in the right context. Like fighting Peas, even more so with Hyper, does not work. However freezing when they try to use Pea Gatling is gold. Goalie is generally an excellent pick against Citron infestation or Corn rushes. I see no reason to change him.

Ice Cactus needs a buff. And i would say only a damage buff. Also a variant i like to play but always with the intention to go Hard Mode. Ice Cactus gets frozen faster by an Arctic Trooper than dishing out freeze herself - at long range sniping. It is absurd. Her projectiles are somewhat slower, or should i say less reactionary, and hitting targets is difficult. Especially critical hits are hard to pull off which are required to win a long range shootout. And then her damage output is abysmal (its like what? 18 crit and 15 regular?). Good luck against an Astronaut.

Concerning Arctic Trooper i've already mentioned that i got frozen within 1 second in another thread. I have a recording of that. And i counted frames of my 30 FPS recording from the first frame of being visually hit, to the first visual sign of being frozen. It was exactly 30 frames. While i was moving on a sever with a ping reported of 60 ms. And its even worse when you try to have the upper hand as Cactus against an Arctic Trooper somewhere far away. Something needs to be changed here.

And to AC Perry i say buff his damage. Do not touch his freeze. We've been there and it was awful. Welder gets good damage output despite of his fire splash (effectively 30 per splash), so the man with the mobile AC unit can have some more too.

Frozen Citron is complex as always. Citron as a whole is the largest ongoing "experiment" in this game. I currently see no reason for it to exist and have no clear picture of how to change it.

I thought it was meant to fight back against Mechs (of which are many) but apparently that was never the case and now it is a bulky hit and run class. PopcapTM

And then there is an additional very specific design flaw that plagues the game: the game does not ignore the freeze effect during otherwise damage invulnerability. This means that during the revival animation (that has a short invulnerability) the freeze effect can already stack. And once the revival is complete the target is already frozen with full HP. This is rarely seen in multiplayer but a noticeable problem during Boss Hunt. And nonetheless an issue that needs to be fixed.

  • Snow soldier freezes too quickly, even after the nerf.  A skiiled player can stop you from moving before you even know where you're getting it from.  Ice pea and cactus seem about right.  Goalie star is underwhelming due to poor DPS.  AC Perry - does anyone even play this character??  Frozen citron - well, the language filter here keeps me from sharing my nickname for him.

  • @pandareno1999 pretty much nailed it. Ice variants can be annoying and in varying degrees. They're why the Yeti King boss hunt is the worst one and why I'm glad I have the rainbow flower on my Sunflowers when I run that one.

Frozen Citrons sniping people used to be the worst offenders in MP games but since the nerfs they're not as common or as bad. The Arctic Trooper is the most obnoxious of them now in MP.

Frozen Citron has to be nerfed, last night a max rank players on TT, obviously pretty skilled with it. They were annoying, at how quick you're getting frozen when close duel or even a bit farther duel

  • I enjoy playing ice, but at the same time, feel rather deplorable as the variants have the unique ability to negate a player's activity. Then again that is mostly self-conscious and can be quelled naturally.

I think goalie is alright. He does the right amount of damage and he works great at stopping gatling peas (as well as isolating their healers). Ac needs a damage up, not a freeze upgrade; or increase the shot speed of his projectiles allowing you to land direct shots more effectively like with the plumber's update. On the opposite end of the train with Ice cactus, critical shots can freeze rather quickly depending on the player, but my issue is moreover a reticle problem. Her shot strays slightly further from where aimed (aim assist is always off on my end) indicating that the point from where she fires is mildly off. Wondering if anyone else has this issue or no? For both arctic and frozen, I look at them the same way, noting them as neat prototypes just poor implementation.

All very good input guys.  There is a fine line in tuning any elemental variants, especially as a whole.  Thank you for all your input and nice to see all the vets responding to this topic.

  • So the funny problem I have with AC Perry is his visual effects. With his high rate of fire, I get blinded at close range and I have to rely on damage numbers to locate what I'm shooting at,  Other than that I think his damage is fine. Would also love to see a damage buff on ice cactus.
