This happens in any game mode where they have restricted the classes you can play and those classes contain Party Time variants.
Near as we players can tell because most people don't have the Party variants, and they get unlocked for these particular game modes, they jump at the chance to play the Party Imp and Party Corn. What seems to happen is that the party variants have a lot of particle and light effects associated with them, with all the confetti, flash and glowing going on and if you happen to be in a portion of the map where the amount of all of these effects gets saturated your machine essentially chokes and the frame rate crashes.
Players who weren't forced to try to render the over-saturation of confetti, flash and glowing keep playing and those choking on the rendering get stalled out. It's the only explanation which fits why it only happens on the Super Mix events which limit character selection while simultaneously opening up Party variants temporarily to those who don't own them already.
I've learned to sit them out and wait until the next scheduled event, or at least wait until the people rushing to play Party variants ease up a bit later in the event.
Maybe that is the cause, but the second game when it happened, I was on the winter map in an area where I was by myself. I didn't see any party characters, frame rate just seem to stall out for no apparent reason.
So who knows....whatever the cause, it needs to be fixed.
I'm guessing at the mechanics involved; judging by the stuttered animation when it hits it's not affecting all players universally since my character and others in my view are "stuck" while other characters are clearly moving normally.
For certain it's always Super Mix events with limited character availability but where the character classes allowed are fully unlocked and have Party variants available.
Quite awhile ago they had an "Agent Pea v Camo Soldier" event which limited characters to just the one on each side and we didn't have this issue, nor did we have it during "Rando's Revenge" or other Super Mixes where character selection is left open; but we did get it with "Battle of the Exploding Heroes" where Plants were limited to Citron, Corn and Rose and Zombies were limited to Imps, Pirates and Superbrainz; all of which feature various Legendary types and all of which have Party variants and during another limited character Super Mix where the selections available included Party variants which were unlocked for everyone.
While we don't know exactly what triggers it the Party variants are the one common thread and we know that it's not just server related because the impact is system wide, hampers your ability to exit and close the game but disappears completely once the game does close or when the game itself disconnects you due to inactivity caused by whatever is happening.
Yes, happened to me twice today. It is the Party Imp that causes the freeze. Once the party imp becomes a mech and uses his missile madness, everything locks up. I had to reboot twice.
Don't know if they fixed this issue or not, but I was finally able to complete some matches.
What also makes those mode Imp-possible for the attackers is the fact that spawnable plants also have infinite ammo as well. You can literally just put down one sniper plant and that just instant kills everyone.
How has nobody complained about this? lolI haven't had time to go in yet today. But I've got 50 stars banked and I'm curious if the 50 star chest is giving out good things.

Nvm it seems to be only a bug with the scaredy shroom. I got pretty triggered because my first 3 games involved nothing but players using them which is why i thought it was a major issue...still kinda is but it's still playable for the most part@superxmario128 totally agree about the scaredy shroom man that thing just tears you apart with no problems.
On a good note thanks to EA for removing the party characters and clearing the LAG because that was totally unbearable.
I didn't get a chance to play until tonight. I'm kinda bummed because I was hoping to level up those two characters some for rank. The teams, judging from the few games I played, seem to balance surprisingly well in a bizarro way.
The infinite ammo/scaredy shroom thing has been reported on before this event, but I never saw it in action until tonight. The four I planted gathered around 45 kills. And I never realized how good the imp can be at pushing the boot. At one point, there were three of us jumping and piled on top of one another, all completely hidden from fire coming from the castle.
