Mount Steep Battle Chest 4 (SOLO) Video Tutorials

THE CHALLENGE:  Mount Steep Battle Chest 4 is Team Vanquish.  Playing as a Plant, you're outnumbered by Zombies 2 to 1.  Furthermore, your only AI teammates are Sunflower, Chomper, and Cactus.

PREFACE: Before attacking this challenge, it's important to know your opponents/allies strengths/weaknesses.  Additionally, consider how heavily outnumbered you'll be, you should try to attack from afar/from the outside looking in - so to say (this doesn't always work).  Zombies are comprised of 80's Action Hero and All Star, Scientist, Imp, Super Brainz, Pirate, Engineer, and Soldier.  Considering the fire power (in the game's current state), the whatasized Zombie team, and never-miss AI, you'll also want to team up with Sunflower as often as possible.  If you can't find Sunflower, try to roll with Chomper and attack together/revive when he runs off like a puppy head-on into traffic.

The first video is Peashooter and you'll quickly notice the gatling is key to Peashooter's victory here.   Much like playing this challenge with Citron's beam, try to use the Peashooter's gatling to disrupt groups of Zombies rather than 1 v 1 situations.  It's a bit risky to take on groups of enemies but disrupting the grouping seems to be key here;  kill 2 or 3 Zombies instead of 1, if you have the choice (even if you die more often) and the opposition won't be able to revive themselves so easily... REVIVE your teammates any chance you get/almost at all costs... and the risks will eventually pay off (you'll eventually keep the enemy groups down/unreviveable and will pull comebacks with your own revived teammates that will sway the momentum of the opposition).

Gatling, gatling, gatling:

As soon as the Citron video finishes uploading, I'll embed it and try to explain the strategy as well.

  • Woot! Woot! I have finally beat the zombies in this Outnumbered challenge. splash_damage, I have tried too many times but after reading your tips and watching your peashooter and citron videos, I got the win after only a handful more tries with my peashooter. Rather than trying to chase them down, I hung out with my ai pals and waited for the zombies to wander toward us. It truly did seem like the more gatling vanquishes I got without being vanquished myself, then my ai pals played a bit better too. Thank you so much for helping here. I don’t think I’ll try again any time soon but kudos to you for getting it right with so many characters. Again your tips and videos are much appreciated. - BabciaRosie

Nightcap was pretty easy for me.  I need to check the upgrades as I'm not sure the combination I used but am fairly certain I used a piercing bullets upgrade?  I learned quickly to utilize the big bubble ability and to keep enemies at range!

Other than that, use your Shadow Sneak to escape (almost exclusively) and again, keep enemies at range!

EDIT:  Upgrade kit = Fearless, Piercing Power, Low Life, Rough Patch, and Combo

Success with the Chomper boiled down to patience for me.  Utilizing the Grody Groop (spelling?) and throwing down Spikeweeds at highly-traveled intersections helps me loads.  I can't stand using Chomper now that I have to shoot with him and don't have much input here.

EDIT:  Upgrade kit = Face Bite, Halitosis, Low Life, Rough Patch, and Combo

Rose is another particularly challenging character to play outside of TT because she's most effective at a distance and her abilities tend to lean toward evasion rather than attacking.  I found only Cactus to be worse for this challenge.

My upgrade kit was: Time Snare and Pollination.  I tried MANY upgrade combos and the 1st or 2nd time I used Pollination (instead of Thistle Missile or Locked and Loaded), I was able to win.  Same type of bob-n-weave strategy as the other characters + a little luck.  I have to cut this post short for work.  I'll post Cactus later today or in the morning.

Cactus was the hardest for me to beat.  I ended up using Rough Patch, Health Regeneration Delay, and Adrenaline Rush for my upgrade kit.

Regardless the area of the map you find yourself "defending," make sure to drop as many Potato Mines as possible to block doorways.  Also use them when you lure (shoot and hide) enemies to ya.... by defending an area - I mean that it's more of a survival game with Cactus than any other plant in this challenge.  You can't zoom quickly enough to drop close enemies and the majority of them can one shot ya so it's best to sit back in a well-fortified area and hope your team groups up with you.  The enemies WILL come to you so just let them do their thing and try to pick them off one-by-one.  This is the ultimate game of cat and mouse, knowing when to push with Cactus and when to sit back.

SHOOT THEM IN THE FACE!  LoL at that advice but you'd be surprised how often I don't think of it.

Heyyyyy!!! Congrats!  Thank you for letting us know what worked for you.  I wish I had more time to make a Zombie version of this thread.

  • After taking some time away from this battle chest after getting really frustrated, I finally beat this one solo.  Got to 49-50 using Citron and then won 50-44 using Snapdragon.

I see a lot of variability in the play of the Plant AI characters.  One time they'll appear "intelligent" and Chomper & Sunflower will work together and run up some vanquishes.  The next game, they'll all be running around individually and getting killed regularly.

The challenges in this video are slightly easier now as they were recorded before TTK (time to kill) changes were applied.  That said, the general approach to winning is still the same with most characters.  Citron’s change to Naval Laser made him one of the most difficult to adjust post TTK so good job.

Congrats and thanks for letting us know your experience!
