Noob Help

So I have never touched a pvz fps before, and i’m really struggling to learn the basics. I don’t know what a good character would be for someone like me, someone who doesn’t know a lick about any of the characters. What’s an easy, low skill cap plant/zombie to play as?

Also, If I could get a run down of what upgrade/perk thingies I should be using, that would be great.

  • You must find yourself what is your best character.  But I recommend Sunflower and Scientist. When I first started playing this game 5 years ago I played a lot as Sunflower. Also, Night Cap, Acorn, and Imp are good because they have a small hitbox. If you like mobility, I would recommend equipping these 3 upgrades on Sunflower - Hard Target, Quick Egress, and Shove. But the Quick Egress and Shove you will unlock as Master. The first zombie I started playing was Captain Dreadbeard. Because in Garden Warfare - the first version of this game I almost never played as Zombies lmao.

    Sorry for the broken grammar.

  • It depends on your playstyle. Here are my recommendations:

If you fancy yourself an aggressive player and like to get in firefights and swap bullets, the Peashooter and Footsoldier are the easiest to pick up and play. Their abilities are all straightforward and don't require much skill to learn, such as an exploding chili bean and a smokescreen.

If you fancy yourself a Sniper, then get some practice in with Captain Deadbeard and the Cactus. They have weapons that automatically charge for increased damage when aiming down the sights, and they can do an extremely high amount of damage when fully charged, killing most targets in 1-2 hits. They're not the best in single player game modes, but they're both fantastic characters in PVP, especially if you start learning their little tricks.

And lastly, if you fancy yourself a player who would support your teammates instead of leading them into battle, try the Scientist or the Sunflower. The Sunflower is a healer who is very easy to pick up and play, though the Scientist can be tricky and take some time to get used to.

There are plenty of other roles you can fill, but those are the easiest characters to pick up, based on your playstyle, and which game mode you want to play.

  • @Casenator485 Easiest thing is to play around in the PvE regions to start with, to try the characters out & see what you like, but you've had some good advice so far.

Doing the quests in the regions gives you lots of xp as well, which will help you rank up your characters to unlock the upgrades.
The characters feel a lot better to play once you've got a few upgrades!
  • @Casenator485 Once you save up enough coins, I highly recomend you purchase the Wizard Zombie from Rux store. In my 500 hours of playing the game I have found him to be the easiest to play by far. He has an extremely simple kit that is very easy to master.

Once you get enough upgrades, you'll find that in most situations as wizard, all you'll have to do to win a fight is activate his spell disaster ability. It creates 5 (maybe more?) homing projectiles that deal 80 dmg each. These things have insane homing they'll follow people around corners. Unlike SnapDragon's Blue Blazes ability, you do not have to aim spell disaster at all.

His Costar ability works as a great escape tool and is also just rly good at supporting allies. It gives you an extra health bar aswell as a homing weapon with splash damage. Because homing isnt already good enough by itself, wizard gets extra splash dmg with his Costar primary :  ^)

Zeelixir is a very braindead ability. You throw it down on either zombies or plants. When a zombie is splashed by it, they are granted invulnerability and are cleansed from most negative plant status effects (including jinx, goatify, grody goop, etc.). You can also use it on a zombie as they are being swallowed by a chomper. Simply throw it as he bursts out of the ground as he attempts to eat somene.
When thrown onto plants, it does a number of diffrent things.
    It will:

    1. Disable the plant's sprint button = they cant sprint for 3 seconds
    2. Disable the plants jump button = they cant jump for 3 seconds
    3. Disable mobility abilities like acorn's dash for 3 seconds
    4. Force a rose out of Arcane enigma + apply all the other mentioned zeelixir debuffs
    5. Reduce Nightcap's invisibility Duration

In short, Zeelixir when thrown on zombies = 1.5 seconds of invincibility, Zeelixir when thrown on plants = plant nervous system is shut down for 3 whole seconds

For the upgrades, I recommend taking "hard target" = 3 points, "Ve-o-sa"  = only 2 points (equip when you unlock it at a later rank) and "Wand Wammo" - also only 2 points (equip when you unlock it at a later rank). Until you unlock those last 2 upgrades, still feel free to use hard target. It gives you insane movespeed and only costs 3 of your 7 points. This is the build I use the most on him atm. He has a multitude of other really good upgrades but if you just want a straight up unga bunga easy mode character to play then this is the upgrade build for you. Honestly the only upgrade u need on wizard to be even remotely decent is hard target.

  • Haha between us we are going to recommend all the characters!

I find All Star easiest to pick up play occasionally and still do well, so might suit a new player.

I'd recommend Pea Shooter for his splash damage and Foot Solider for his auto fire.....

  • I'm like a 20 plus time #1 Rank in the World on a variety of different games (including Garden Warfare 2), but that's good for you because I will be doing a WORLD CLASS GUIDE on Garden Warfare 3 (Battle for Neighborville) which is coming soon.

One basic of the game is that there is a level based progression system, and as you go through the levels, you UNLOCK upgrades for the characters, meaning that all of the upgrades are not available to you (as a new player), per character, from the start. Similar to Call of Duty or even a Gears of War title, you start your character out at "Level 1", then you climb to 10, then after you reach 10 you can basically "prestige" your character which resets the level 10 rank back down to one, but gives you a gold star and moves you on to the next bracket. If you go into the changing booth (aka the character select), you can see that each character starts out as level 1 Recruit with 5 stars (under the phrase "Recruit") being grayed out. I think the system goes like this:

    Starting Rank:

    Recruit Levels 1-10

    Advanced Levels 1-10

    Specialist Levels 1-10

    Elite Levels 1-10

    Super Elite Levels 1-10

    Master Levels 1-10

Grandmaster goes on permanently, as you can reach an infinite amount of levels in this game (in theory), but you stop acquiring standard upgrades after reaching the "Master" levels. The "Advanced" and "Specialist" brackets might actually be backwards (and may need flip flopped) because I forget and have nearly all characters Grandmastered, but my fundamental point still stands...

Any and all upgrades acquired are directly applicable to online play, meaning that other players can and will have a technical advantage over you as you start. But with that said: There's alot of upgrades that are close to worthless and/or bad, but obviously alot of them are going to be very good as well (which I will talk about in my guide).

So you're not going to want to go in to PVP online with real people without first getting comfortable with your control scheme, turning ON aim assist, and giving the character you're using some basic upgrades (at the start all characters can fill the slots)... Go into character select and press the middle black bar on the PS4 controller to apply upgrades.

Also play Turf Takeover as opposed to the other games because it's (strangely) both friendly to new players but is also more of an expert gameplay mode... Some of the other modes are essentially a mosh pit and this game has bugs and technical issues that make it very hard to deal with low skilled players inside of a mosh pit type of arena; so you want to get a little bit of separation so that if and when you develop some type of skill you are able to actually apply it as opposed to having 9 dudes run up from behind on you all holding hands that just press the trigger button one time each and it kills you...

  • In regards to @aikohu , this game is obviously class based, so I would recommend trying to Grandmaster everyone if you want to continue to play, which can only take about 3-4 months if you play alot... Once you access a diverse range of characters you'll likely end up figuring out that there is more of a "tier list" with the characters than a best character for a particular style of play or whatever... This game has high tier character, mid range, and a few low... The worst character in the game (in my opinion) was the Scientist just a few days ago, but he just got a prize map upgrade recently which completely modifies the way he can be played... Character upgrades that you get through the prize map are not normal upgrades that you can access through the normal upgrade progression system, and can only be unlocked by either:

    1) Getting to the end of a prize map and/or completing the map itself with normal prize bulb acquisition, or you can simply spend lots of money to unlock bulbs and fill in the map that way.

    or

    2) You can wait until the end of a prize map and purchase the upgrades from Rux.

There's only three prize map upgrades so far, which are:

    Rose: Thorn Apart

    Kernel Corn: Shogun Guard

    Scientist: Steam Blaster

^---All of the above information in mind, my personal tier list is getting towards completion... I only have the Wizard and the Acorn left to Grandmaster, and I will likely have Wizard done today... So here are the characters that I think are high tier so far:

    PLANTS/Incomplete Assessment

Peashooter: High Tier/Somewhere in the A Tier range (at least)

Kernel Corn: High Tier/Likely in the S Tier range.

Nightcap: Solid Character/Likely at least A Minus Tier.

Snapdragon: Just finished him today/High Tier/Likely at least A Minus Tier.

Sunflower: High tier/At least in the A Tier range with absolute certainty.

Rose: High Tier/May have been the best character in the game, was in S Tier range, but was nerfed.

    ZOMBIES/Incomplete Assessment

Footsoldier: High Tier/One of the best character in the game/Definitely in Super Tier (S Tier) range if used correctly.

    80's Action Hero: High Tier/Likely S Tier

Electric Slide: High Tier/Was at least S Minus tier before she got nerfed.

All Star: High Tier/Likely high A Tier; maybe S.

Engineer: High Tier/Maybe S Tier range. He's very good, but he's got so many upgrades that also may be extremely good that I have to study him more to see how broken he may be.

Wizard: Decent Tier and surprisingly solid character. Has some flaws, but if used correctly can actually do big damage from range and has decent abilities, solid rate of fire, etc. At least in the (high mid tier) range, but likely better. Probably in the A bracket.
