The first thing they would have to do is earn back the people who left the series as one bad game can drive fans away and make them cautious with buying another one. I've seen it happen with other series such as aliens with the latest fireteam trailer being riddled with people cautious about the game after Colonial Marines which like bfn should have been one of the best games in the series with the blueprints of the past to guide it but instead became a dissapointing failure littered with bugs and glitches which put the franchise on ice in terms of shooters for years (we gave up an avp 2010 sequel for this crap-practically every aliens fan in 2013?).
Had the upgrade system not been full of filler and 'must have' upgrades, the idea that they have different weights is a good one, and could really allow us to vary our builds. The GW1 upgrade system was automatic; every character had 3 upgrades and you got them from packs, meaning you had all 3 and were at max power for that variant, or you had 2 or less and were not. In GW2 you unlocked better upgrades (mostly) as you leveled up so until you got to upgrades like more ammo, faster reload, and other better ones, you were stuck with stuff like faster regen and the like. I feel that had BfN's upgrade system had better choices and gave all the upgrades proper, balanced weight, it could have been an improved extension of GW2's system.
I could handle legendary upgrades if they toned down the crazy ones (I'm looking at you Brainium Basher especially). I actually like the idea of varying gameplay like that, but if they brought back variants, we wouldn't need it as much. In fact, if variants were more exciting and original than just adding elemental effects, which they experimented with in GW2 with some of that game's variants, it could really spice up a new shooter. How about a future soldier with that bouncing projectile idea we saw datamined, or other weird and fun new ways to create new twists on old characters? That would be good stuff.
I avoided Colonial Marines as I love FPS games, but not a big AvP player (I do love that older one the one from 2000 where you could play a campaign as the marine, predator, or xenomorph though) and you're right @stukapooka , the reception of this new fireteam game isn't warm exactly and a large part of that is from how bad colonial marines was but also that it's under Daybreak games and they aren't exactly a fan favorite either.
I'm hanging around and playing all 3 PvZ shooters and want a new one. I don't have the same dislike of BfN that some other veterans do, it is my least favorite of the 3 games but still have some fun with it, but I don't blame anyone that is leery of a new game after how badly BfN went. They'll have to promote and support it better than BfN, and I too want more of a return to GW2 (and like a lot of folks, want a return of the GW1 and GW2 maps to a new game, barring Time Park anyway), but I don't want them to ignore some of the things I really like in BfN (helping revive teammates, better cooldown and ammo remaining visibility on the HUD, the new characters, saving multiple builds/costumes for starters), when they make a new game. If they keep the new characters from BfN and give them variants, they need to look at some of the balancing for them as well as certain other variants from GW1 and 2.

@Iron_Guard8Tbh I never really cared about the upgrades in gw1 and 2, they were just kinda there imo. I wonder who saw them and decided they needed to do more of that system rather than the widely liked variants in bfn.
The main problem is also how broken the upgrades made some characters like hardened but with others they didn't really get anything gamechanging and some are really unimaginative like more damage on last shot isnt interesting and it most likely will never be used unless you suck at aiming that much or a speed boost while walking in a game with sprint and mobility abilities, why?
Lengendaries like steam blaster highlighted just how broken scientist was in his core design with 3 insta warps and heals. Thorns apart charges regardless of helping teamates so just play as normal then delete a zombie player.
More variants like yeti chomper that change the way a class plays their primary weapon could be a great idea followed through. Man, I miss the differing z mechs for every imp variant.
AvP 2000 and AvP 2010 are both on steam yet its easier to find multiplayer games on 2010 (console is freaking dead). You can find avp2 and primal hunt on the internet for free on avpunkown along with custom server instructions.
The 2010 devs were going to make a direct sequel with the playable characters from 2010 involved with influence from those insane comics until the licensing got ripped in half with the fox buyout so we can only wonder what it would be after the ending of the game being a good setup premise.
Another reason fireteams arrival was luke warm is some people just saw it as discount bug hunt survival from avp with no other gamemodes.- Iron_Guard85 years agoLegend
@stukapooka the thing I miss most about no variants in BfN are those different mechs. I loved that part of Imps in GW2!
Some upgrades in BfN are just 'there' they don't do much, or are generic, or fill up that last point in your build and others like hardened for Acorn and rapid fire for the Foot Soldier are too good even at their cost. They would need to fix this for a new game if they kept this idea. I say the idea for the upgrades in BfN is good, just that they weren't implemented well.
They could drop legendary upgrades and bring back variants for sure. They have some they need to balance before adding more, but the idea of a Space Cadet with a flamethrower, and a poison Oak and other variants are very cool, but we need to avoid stuff like Brainium Basher ruining lobbies.
They need to examine all abilities for a new game, especially a lot of the changes they made in BfN like the scientist's warps, the heavy helper, and so on.
- stukapooka5 years agoLegend@Iron_Guard8 Yeah bfn abilities should either be dropped or reworked as I dont want gw2 discount fat peashooters engineer abilities but i don't wont the braindead splice of demoman and torbjorn that can easily fly out of combat with no risk or diet widowmaker deadbeard/cactus who the map design doesn't accomodate at all. All stars shield was just kinda there like I wouldnt mind being able to walk through it but the forcefield was trash, nightcap is a terrible stealth character, citron is discount Reinhardt with a gun, and slide deserves a more unique moveset.
I dont think anybody uses the first few upgrades in bfn unless to fill out the set of their more broken abilities.
I wouldnt worry if the first thing I heard about a new game is "brainium basher will not return".
