Observations on the game as it was, is, and perhaps will be

I've seen a lot of comments about the original GW compared to GW2, especially regarding maps and balance. I went and played some of the old game over the weekend although already at 313 there, and have been playing more multi-player matches in GW2 ever since the community challenge as well.

This is similar to my other long post but more based on using what already exists instead of adding new stuff and after playing both games again directly after each other for a live comparison.

I agree that there are aspects of the old game we need back but some of the criticisms seem inapplicable or overly harsh of a game that it is excellent and I enjoy more than either Battelborn or Overwatch, although I enjoy both of those games as well. After playing both GWs for many, many hours I wanted to discuss my own observations on both:

  • I too miss the old maps but I feel the new maps are unfairly criticized far too often. Some of the points in Turf Takeover maps need to be adjusted but I recall the first day a friend and I jumped into the Great White North map when Rose was 50%+ of the plant team and being a zombie there was almost unplayable. It should never have been that way in release but things are certainly getting better overall. The smaller maps for other modes I all enjoy but especially Lunar Landing & Z-Tech Factory which are excellent.
  • Zombopolis is gorgeous and fun to play on. The last point I agree with many prior posters that the battery got overbuffed though. Obviously the defender should be able to hold the attacker's off like any final stage in turf takeover, but this seems too far in my plays of the map.
  • The Bootering Ram in Seeds of Time was too easy before but like the Zombopolis battery it seems overbuffed as well.
  • Balance: balance can never be perfect in an asymmetrical game such as GW and GW2 and even games that are several years old are still getting balance patches and this game is no exception. It is better than it was at launch but some of the recent changes seem a step backwards, such as the Cacti changes. Getting the teams and characters into a comfortable median range is a key to a healthy community. Some people will complain about everything, and some will just shrug and play regardless but getting things well centered is good for both the game and the community.
  • Related to my prior point I see a lot of Imps in the game. Imps are fun and the mechs are a cool idea but when you have at least 4 Imps in a 12 person team that's a bit excessive. Not sure what the solution is and I love playing the class but having to beat down so many on a control point can be a major pain. Going to back 50 health is probably not the solution here, perhaps 60 health or reducing mech health a bit?
  • More of a QoL issue but the customization UI is a bit wonky. Even today I still occasionally accidentally leave the booth when trying to customize a character.
  • Playing GW1 over the weekend I was able to join mixed mode and had a blast. I even got some Taco Bandits in and that mode needs to come back. Turf Takeover is my favorite and seems to be the most popular but some of the maps only work on the smaller modes and it's nice for the variety. Also stealing tacos and loading them into a UFO is just fun and weird enough to fit the game's irreverence!
  • On maps: Aqua Center while its layout was slightly changed in addition to the obvious aesthetic alterations to Garden Center seems to indicate that the old maps will work fine with the new game with some tweaks as needed. As I stated previously I like the new maps too but the old ones were not only great but nostalgic as well. Yes, being nostalgic for maps that are only 2 years or so is a bit silly for an older gamer like me but they are also pre-existing assets on the same or at least similar engine so it would be an easy way to both please those of us that love GW1 and to give additional content to the new game simultaneously. Again that gnome portal in the town hall seems to indicate we shall see the maps again, and hopefully Taco Bandits as well!
  • I say this a lot but the Backyard Battleground is quite simply one of the best ideas I've ever seen in a game like this. The ability to jump in and play around for a few minutes before leaving for work in the morning and feel I got something done, even if only a few points of XP against NPCs or completing a simple quest or 2. Please expand upon this gold mine and especially allow us to place more of the huge decorations we have acquired from our escapades. Currently using the Mega-Sunflower lighthouse on my dock point but want to use the other large stuff too!
  • Other stuff from GW1: The century pack has me concerned since it gives us some of the old stuff in GW2 but I and many others here obviously miss the old customizations and so many good gestures. Since like the maps these already exist as easily usable or convertible assets, it seems a simple way to appease the player base by their return.
  • Consumables: Liking the new ones but bringing back the rest of the old ones and hoping to see some new ones as well would be well-received.

There's a lot of negativity here on the forums, like most games seem to attract admittedly, and while some complaints are legitimate, some not so much. At the end of the day GW2 is great and I've been able to get some of my friends to play as well and they to enjoy it. We're all older gamer as well (42-50ish), so the appeal is universal. I am glad to see so many of the serious bugs crushed by now although some were severe enough to have delayed the launch in the first place and that has driven some away unfortunately. I play on PC and have had no issue getting into games, mixed, turf takeover, and both ops consistently (NA East server). Once balance is closer to that elusive median and we see an expansion of the backyard battleground and the return of the old maps as well as new characters and variants, the game will be even better and that's what we want to see!
