One Idea to Alleviate Reviving Frustrations

I have talked about reviving in here previously so I won't be diving deep into why it is frustrating in this post.

I came up with an idea that alleviates one of the biggest frustrations in the game which is trying to revive others when they have already pressed the button, or risking yourself to revive others but they press anyways.

So the idea is simple and straightforward:

  • Even if the vanquished ally presses respawn, their bodies remain on the ground and other teammates can still revive them.
  • The player who pressed "respawn" will get an option to hop back to their last place for 3 ~ 5 seconds if they were revived by their teammates successfully.
  • During that time, the vanquished body will remain on the floor until the player accepts to respawn back to where they got vanquished previously.
  • Being revived to the previously vanquished place becomes null and void if the player got damaged after respawning. (For example, if I pressed the respawn button, then respawned from start, and then got damaged by an enemy, my vanquished body will disappear even if that teammate had successfully revived me. I won't be able to respawn back there anymore.)
  • Changing heroes will also make it all null and void as well. You cannot switch heroes and then go back to where you have been vanquished. *1

All of what I mentioned above could be done in 2 ways: *1

  • Respawned players at the back will get notified that they are being revived and will be forced to go back there if the reviving had been successfully completed. <- preferred  *1
  • Respawned players will have the option to respawn back or not. *1

I prefer the first one because it is more logical and the revived ally would act as a backup to those had revived them, instead of having to guess whether they'll accept or not. *1

Just a quick reminder to why I would like this to happen:

  • There are upgrades that are based on reviving.
  • They get wasted if others keep pressing the respawn button. (for example the Foot Soldier has the ability to revive teammates faster inside stinky clouds... If I threw it on a vanquished player, then they just press "Respawn" before I manage to reach them, it would waste me an ability on almost nothing...)
  • Puts good Samaritan players at risk trying to revive others.

This would hopefully alleviate reviving and death frustrations for the players especially in Turf Takeover where you have to sprint to reach objectives or in Team Vanquish where every little revive counts.

* EDIT: Added all lines that end with *1 to clarify the process further.

  • I am one of those annoying people who respawns mid-revive 😉

Half the time it is by accident. I wait a few seconds, no one comes to my rescue, so I respawn, but just as I do, someone starts reviving me. So it's an accidental respawn.

The rest of the time I do it intentionally, since someone is trying to revive me in the middle of a firefight, and I estimate that they are going to die while reviving me. I make the judgement call that they are better off focussing their energy on fighting.

Another thing that makes me hesitant to be revived is that I am at a disadvantage once I'm revived. I might be low on ammo, under fire, and disoriented. In other words, I wait to be revived, then am immediately vanquished again.

However I think your suggestion is intriguing, and I would like to see reviving made more appealing. Especially since the cost of respawning is so high. In some of the TT payload levels, defenders have to sprint for a full 30 seconds to reach the payload after respawning!

I do press the revive button in most of the cases you've mentioned. But it all depends on the game, whether there are people who actually care about reviving or not, and who's reviving me... You don't know, maybe a Citron/Super Brainz/All-Stars are reviving you with their shields up. Or a Nightcap/Foot Soldier hiding your body using their abilities then reviving you. I personally tried that with the fast revive upgrade, it works great! I got 20-ish revives as both. And I think that they're actually better than Sunflower/Scientist in terms of reviving because you can fully conceal yourself and the body.

But in general, I think that people assume that others would press the respawn button, so why bother going there anyways. It happened to me a couple of times, I saw a scientist passing by, he waited 2 ~ 3 seconds around my body... then I assumed he totally ignored me. At the same exact time I pressed the button, he came to my body trying to revive me. So I think that people either don't notice vanquished allies fast enough or they just assume that most people would just press the respawn button anyways.

That's why, as soon as someone falls, I try to revive them as fast as possible. But only if they were shooting from cover. Folks who die near enemy spawns or out in the open... well, I don't bother... I think that Nightcap/Foot Soldier are better at that.

What you've mentioned is really important though... I think that players who try to revive others should know that whomever they're reviving had pressed "respawn" already. This could be a gesture that indicates they were in danger or think that it wasn't an appropriate place to be revived..

But yet again, I understand what you're saying! It's "their" problem. The people who risk it to revive you. And I think that they should learn who to revive and who to leave alone if they want to be more efficient (by staying alive and contributing to the team I mean).

Thank you for sharing your experiences...

Thank you for taking the time to jot all of this down @GammaX6  and in such a well structured way too. It's super appreciated. You're not wrong, burning an ability to revive someone only to have them respawn can be a pain for sure.

    Hey @jnicol1975, you've covered a good few reasons why someone might respawn. I was thinking on this and another reason might be if the revives weren't coming quick enough for those who need it - for whatever reason. As someone that has spent a lot of her early gaming time dead, it's not fun being on the floor for most of the fight. ^^;
