To initiate Split-Screen on the PS4 both players must have a PSN account and each of those accounts must be connected to an EA account.
The date of birth associated with each account can affect whether or not you can connect; the game is rated for 10+ so a child with a DOB indicating they are younger than that might get blocked from access, and even older children with certain parental controls enabled could be blocked. In the event that one player in the Split- Screen duo is blocked both players will be denied access.
If the second player does not have a PSN account or does not have an EA account then they will play as a "Guest"- a. Consequence of that is that their progress will not be saved in any way so I wouldn't advise it unless they don't mind wasting their time.
To start Split-Screen play you need to visit the stacked pair of old-style television sets found to the right of your Dressing Room in either base- basically across the courtyard from the Multiplayer Portal.
The primary player, the Group Leader, will need to visit there to activate Split-Screen and Player Two will need to follow the prompts and Split-Screen mode will load.

In Split-Screen the second player will not be able to interact with most items in the Backyard since they are basically a "visitor" so they cannot open chests, promote characters, or set decorations. They are also tethered to the Group Leader who decides what they play. The second player can access the Sticker Shop and start Flag of Power as well as pick up any Golden Gnomes found.
If you are getting a specific error when trying to go online with Split-Screen then we'll need to know what error message you are receiving to be able to help you out.
I'm not around my PS4 at the moment but my best guess is that it is due to the gamer tag information or something to do with my recent purchase of renewing my online account. Should second player be signed in as guest only? or should they be signed in as another profile?

They should be signed in on their own profile. Basic rundown: Console needs PS plus account. Both players need PS accounts and EA accounts tied to their console accounts. Both players log in to PS accounts. Player 1 starts game, goes to split screen menu and activates it. Player two presses options button. Game restarts and both are logged in. It sounds like you're doing everything correctly. If this sequence isn't working then it's something like the issues I described above.

I found the older thread I mentioned but unfortunately it was specific to xbox. I recommend going through the help desk on this one. i hope you get someone who knows what they're talking about to help you.
